The challenge is specific to San Diego and aimed at creating apps that can improve the quality of life for San Diego residents through improved city services.

Please see the news release below for details on AT&T Mobile App Hackathon, part of the first-ever AT&T San Diego Apps Challenge (www.SDAppsChallenge.com), which launched in January 2012, in partnership with Mayor Jerry Sanders.

The free competition starts Friday afternoon and continues Saturday, with some hackers known to be programming all night. They  will present their final products for a chance to win great cash prizes. Winners will also be entered into the San Diego Apps Challenge for a chance to win up to $50,000 in prize money.

SAN DIEGO APP DEVELOPERS GET HACKING THIS WEEKEND AT THE AT&T HACKATHON

Mayor Jerry Sanders and AT&T challenge software developers to create innovative apps and compete for cash prizes

SAN DIEGO, THURSDAY, MARCH 22, 2012 — Today AT&T marked the start of its Mobile App Hackathon in partnership with San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders and the City of San Diego to challenge software developers to create apps that will improve city services. At the two-day event, developers will pitch ideas, create cutting-edge apps, and compete for cash prizes.

“The Mobile App Hackathon is a unique opportunity for San Diegans with an app idea to transform it into reality,” said San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders. “This is a fun way for the imaginative thinkers in San Diego to deliver innovative ways to improve quality of life and let loose creatively.”

The Hackathon is open to amateur, professional, and student developers who will use data provided by the city and other cooperating agencies to create apps that will improve services and programs for the City of San Diego. App developers will have access to the latest cutting edge technology to help deploy their apps, which will be fully hosted in the AT&T cloud.

“The app developers at this Hackathon come up with some really remarkable ideas,” said Mark Leslie, Vice President of AT&T. “As a technology company, we’re proud to support the innovators and developers that aren’t afraid to push the envelope when it comes to the many possibilities of today’s technology.”

The Mobile App Hackathon will award cash prizes for the best overall app and the best San Diego App. The top apps from the Hackathon may be considered for entry into the larger and on-going AT&T San Diego Apps Challenge, where developers will have a chance to compete for $50,000 in cash prizes. The winning apps for the San Diego Apps challenge will be announced in June.

If you want to become an Entrepreneur, this is your best opportunity. This employment opportunity will allow you to become a part owner in an exciting new web-based company.

Consider that many major Internet-based company’s were started by small groups of individuals working together. Yahoo was founded by two graduate students. Google also can trace it’s origins to a couple of graduate students. Facebook, Youtube, Ebay, LinkedIn…the list goes on. All of these companies started small, grew quickly, became household names and provided their founders with a great deal of professional success.

How are these founders different than the average person? Is it that they have amazing ideas that no one else has? Did they just get lucky? Good ideas and good fortune help, but all of these founders success stems from the fact that they worked hard and were willing to “take a risk” on an exciting, new adventure.

I’m seeking people who have the same desire to build a new business from scratch. This new business will be developed from the ground up. It will be a web-based organization. Further details will be provided to the individuals who are selected for this employment opportunity.

Just who am I? I’m a business owner with over 20 years experience running my own companies. I currently own and operate two companies, both of which I built from scratch. I am putting together a small team of individuals to create this new business.

Specifically I am seeking the following type of person:
• Self-motivated, self-directed; someone who sees a problem and starts working on a solution
• Strong experience with online social networking
• Technical skills, such as web site development or programming are required
• Most important: the motivation to learn. Starting a new business involves a huge learning curve and the willingness to absorb new tactics and techniques.

This is an offer of employment in which you will work part time for the company in exchange for stock (ownership) in the company. This is not a “get rich” quick scheme nor a MLM. You will not be asked to invest money into the company, but rather your time and effort in which your will be compensated with stock.

If you are interested, please be aware that you should already be supporting yourself through some other means. As with most successful new businesses, this one won’t be designed to generate initial cash flow, but rather grow (hopefully quickly) into a thriving business. Rewards will come in the form of making the business profitable and receiving a share of this profit via your ownership in the company.

If you are still interested, please respond to this post with the following:

#1. A brief description about yourself. Focus on your character traits that would make you a good fit for this opportunity. Please keep this description to under 500 words (about a page of text in a word processor programmer).
#2. A resume.
#3. Your current status (college student, employed, self-employed, etc.). Again, I expect that you will have another source of income, so having a full-time job or being a college student is not a “negative”.

I’m working with the Tribal Digital Village (sctdv.net), InSTEDD.org, and the ServalProject.org to test Paul Gardner-Stephen’s system for infrastructureless telephony that can be contained in a backpack and air dropped into disaster areas. It has the Batphone nickname because one part of the open-source software stack is a protocol called BATMAN (Better Approach To Mobile Adhoc Networking). The Batphones form a mesh network among themselves, and multi-hop through that to negotiate VOIP phone calls.

On our way toward a full catastrophe simulation demo in January, we’re inviting folks to join us for a Hackathon session to uncover and address flaws in the assumptions, logic, software and hardware. That adds up to a magical geekery-filled Sunday. Sunday Nov. 20, 10am – 5pm PST (GMT – 8:00).You can join us in person (on the reservation, 50 min. drive from downtown San Diego) or participate online. Please register for either option here: http://bit.ly/bathack.

You can find out most of what you want to know about the Batphone at http://www.ServalProject.org. You can download the Android app there (requires rooting). The sourcecode is on Github, search for ServalProject. You can also respond here or email me for questions. -Xavier Follow @merelyanode and #Batphone

Dev-ing. Mobile. Good food. Awesome prizes.

Mobile App Hackathon is an event for mobile developers to come together, network, learn about new technologies and build mobile apps. A full day of coding, drinks, food and snacks and fun contents with prizes across categories. Meet new people and teammates, start projects and work on existing ones, and learn from short talks on technologies and trends that can help you build better apps.

Mobile App Hackathon events are brought to you by the AT&T Developer Program. We are platform agnostic and most interested in helping you, the developer, with understanding your platform development options (Android, Windows Phone 7, Symbian, BrewMP, etc) as well as helping make the right introductions to get your application built.

What introductions you ask? We have secured devs from Sencha, Apigee, PhoneGap and AppMobi to help you code that much faster. We even have Jeff Barr from Amazon coming down to talk about their cross platform solution, so make sure to break out your cameras!

Bring your current projects or start new ones. The AT&T Developer Program will provide phones that you can test and hack on. If you need to test your application on some of the latest phones, now is the opportunity. If you have special requests, please email Alex Donn at [email protected] and I will accomodate your phone testing requests.

Please note that this event will be focused on HTML5/Javascript based mobile apps as the uptake is faster for novices and experts alike when you have code ready to go from Sencha that takes care of your mobile UI. Afterall, do you really want to code those extra lines when you can be out basking in the wonderful San Diego sun? If you are interested in native apps please message us and if the demand is strong enough, we can make it happen.

So where is this event happening at? Qualcomm’s office right next to the golden triangle, right on Mira Mesa Blvd. Qualcomm has graciously opened their facilities to us and there is even parking!

To start the day on June 4th, we will have a light breakfast along with lightening talks interspersted throughout the day from the following partners that will help you setup your development environments as well as help you develop your mobile application:

  • 9:00a  Registration and Breakfast + Networking + Start Coding if you want!
  • 9:30a  Dev Environment Setup Help
  • 12:00p  Lunch is Served!
  • 7:00p  App Submission Deadline
  • 7:30p App Demos
  • 8:15p  Content Winners Announced
  • 8:30p  Drinks!

After the hackathon has completed, we will have everyone demo what you’ve worked on, gather feedback and hand out prizes for audience favorites!
