Scripps Technical Forum with Sea-Bird Scientific: Understanding the Implications of the Lahaina Wildfire on Coastal Water Quality (Virtual)

June 27 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

Join our Scripps Corporate Alliance members Sea-Bird Scientific for a Virtual Scripps Technical Forum as they share results of their recent partnership with the University of Hawai’i at Mānoa on how the Lahaina Wildfire impacted coastal water quality.

Dr. Andrea Kealoha (she/her) ([email protected]) | Assistant Professor at University of Hawai’i at Mānoa, Department of Oceanography

Dr. Andrea Kealoha holds a B.Sc. in Global Environmental Science from the University of Hawai’i at Mānoa, a M.Sc. in Marine Sciences from Hawai’i Pacific University, and a Ph.D. in Oceanography from Texas A&M University. She is currently an Assistant Professor at the University of Hawai’I at Mānoa. Her research focuses on global (ocean acidification, ocean warming) and local (coastal acidification, hypoxia, eutrophication, sedimentation and invasive species) stressors to marine ecosystems, particularly coral reef environments. Specifically, she is interested in the physical and chemical conditions that support or inhibit coral reef growth. She incorporates a broad range of tools to address this research including carbonate chemistry, biogeochemistry, isotope geochemistry and sensors.

Marialena Christopoulou (she/her) ([email protected]) | Customer Support Scientist at Sea-Bird Scientific

Marialena holds a B.Sc. in Marine Sciences from the University of Aegean and a M.Sc. in Oceanography from the University of Athens in Greece. Her research has focused on submarine volcanism and hydrothermal activity and their influence on the physical properties of seawater. She is currently completing her Ph.D. at Northern Illinois University where she uses geochemistry to understand oceanographic conditions and nutrient dynamics in the Southern Ocean during a past warm climatic event. She recently joined Sea Bird Scientific as a Customer Support Scientist, aiming to apply her knowledge and further contribute to the field of oceanography.
