SUMMARY:Supply Chain Management in Latin America
DESCRIPTION:Latin America is an increasingly important global supply chain hub. However\, navigating this region’s diverse currencies\, complex geopolitics\, inconsistent infrastructure and economic risks poses a major challenge for managers and policymakers alike. \nTo explore these challenges and opportunities\, GPS’s Cowhey Center for Global Transformation\, in partnership with the Rady School of Management\, is hosting an in-person panel discussion on supply chain management in Latin America. \nThe panel features two of the world’s most knowledgeable and experienced experts on the topic: David Price\, the CEO of one of Latin America’s leading retailers\, PriceSmart; and Eduardo Acosta\, vice president of R.L. Jones Customhouse Brokers\, a major customs and logistics management for U.S.-Latin American import and export. This event will give students an opportunity to learn how some companies are successfully managing these challenges and what their experiences suggest for commercial opportunities in Latin America. \nThis public lecture series is organized by the Peter F. Cowhey Center on Global Transformation at the UC San Diego School of Global Policy and Strategy (GPS) in partnership with the UC San Diego Rady School of Management. For more information\, please visit ccgt.ucsd.edu and rady.ucsd.edu. \nIf you have any questions\, please contact GPS Events Coordinator Bev Fruto.

SUMMARY:Coyote Coffee
DESCRIPTION:Honest truth. The individual coffee requests have been piling up\, and I love that. It means something is working. But I’m one person\, and there’s only so much one-on-one time to go around. \nSo instead of saying no\, I’m trying something else. \nWe’re holding the first Social Coyote Coffee at Communal Coffee in North Park. Show up\, grab a coffee\, and meet whoever else is there. Including me. No agenda. No pitch. Just a table with good people around it. \nThe best part? You’re not just getting time with me. You’re getting time with everyone else who shows up. And if this community is what I think it is\, that might actually be the better deal. \nCapped at 10 people. If it’s good\, we do it again in June. That’s the plan.

SUMMARY:From Emojis to QR Codes: Japan’s Innovation Secrets
DESCRIPTION:What do emojis\, QR codes\, hybrid vehicles\, anime and video games have in common? They are all products of Japan’s unique approach to creativity and innovation. \nWhile Japan is often recognized for refining existing technologies\, it has also produced many groundbreaking ideas of its own that have gone on to redefine entire industries. What enables this kind of innovation — and can it be replicated elsewhere? \nIn this talk\, Hiroaki Niihara — who played a key role in the national government to develop Japan’s modern approaches to economics — shares insights from decades of experience in government and industry. Through examples of pioneering technologies produced in Japan will highlight how the country’s trends in organizational structure\, talent development and creative thinking drive innovation. But beyond stating what has worked in Japan\, Niihara will share what global audiences can learn from it. \nWith a career spanning over 40 years\, including leadership roles at the Ministry of International Trade and Industry\, Hiro Niihara played a leading role in formulating Japan’s growth and distribution policies—including “Abenomics” and “New Capitalism”—under the Abe and Kishida administrations. \nThis public lecture series is organized by the Peter F. Cowhey Center on Global Transformation at the UC San Diego School of Global Policy and Strategy (GPS). For more information on center activities\, please visit ccgt.ucsd.edu. \nIf you have any questions\, please contact GPS Events Coordinator April Hickman.

SUMMARY:CREATIVES WHO RIDE THE ALGORITHM WIN
DESCRIPTION:CREATIVES WHO RIDE THE ALGORITHM WIN.\nCreative AI Panel Event in San Diego. \nOn one side\, there are Creatives who treat AI like a threat to their craft\, their taste\, their job. \nAnd on the other\, we find Creatives who figured out how to ride it\, and are doing the best work of their careers. \nThe difference is not talent. It is knowing how. \nThis is a panel for San Diego creatives ready to cross that line. Agency leaders\, brand directors\, designers\, and AI practitioners. One room. One honest conversation about how to stop watching AI happen to you and start making it work for you. \nWhat you will leave with:\nHow real creative teams are using AI without losing their voice. What skills actually matter now\, and what you can stop stressing about. How to stay the creative lead in a room full of AI tools. Where the unfair advantage is for humans who know their craft. \nOn the panel: a Chief Creative Officer\, a Brand Marketing Director\, a Head of Design\, and an AI strategist. People who are not theorizing about this\, but living it every day.

SUMMARY:The vCon Foundation San Diego Roadshow
DESCRIPTION:Our mission is simple: empower individuals and organizations to unlock the immense potential of vCon technologies. \n\n\n\n\nJeff Pulver is hosting this meeting at the Crexendo Office in San Diego\, CA.\nAbout this event\nOn May 6th in San Diego\, we’re bringing together a group of people thinking seriously about how AI is changing communication. \nThis event will be hosted by Jeff Pulver. \nOne idea has started to stand out. \nA vCon\, or virtualized conversation\, is a structured\, portable record of a conversation. Not just a transcript or a recording\, but something systems can actually use. \nThat matters more than most people realize. \nSince the launch of ChatGPT in 2022\, how we ask questions\, how we get answers\, and how business operates has already shifted. But the way we handle conversations themselves has not kept up. \nMost conversations still disappear. \nOr get reduced to notes\, summaries\, or memory. \nThis session is about what happens when that changes. \nWho should attend\nThis is for people who are: \n\nBuilding AI or communication products\nRunning customer-facing organizations\nThinking about compliance\, data\, and trust\nCurious about where this is heading next\n\nYou don’t need to be an expert in vCon. \nYou do need to care about how communication is evolving. \nWhat to expect\nThis will be a working session. \nYou’ll meet people who are: \n\nBuilding with vCon\nExploring how to apply it\nTrying to understand what it means for their business\n\nThe goal is simple: \nTo leave with a clearer understanding of what’s changing—and what to do about it.

SUMMARY:TILOS-HDSI Seminar: Machine learning for discrete optimization: Theoretical foundations
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Many of the most important optimization problems in practice are massive in scale\, mathematically complex\, and involve numerous unknown parameters. Machine learning offers a powerful way to address these challenges by uncovering hidden structure across problem instances\, but integrating predictions into algorithms raises fundamental questions: which architectures align with combinatorial structure\, and how can we ensure robustness to error? This talk presents two case studies. First\, we show how graph neural networks can approximate the optimal dynamic program for online matching\, yielding algorithms that generalize across graph sizes and achieve strong empirical performance. Second\, we investigate calibration as a principled interface between machine learning and decision-making\, demonstrating through rent-or-buy and job scheduling problems that calibrated predictions yield both theoretical guarantees and practical improvements. This is joint work with Alexandre Hayderi\, Amin Saberi\, Anders Wikum\, and Judy Hanwen Shen.
