SUMMARY:Distrusting the Out-Party: Partisan Disbelief and Biased Updating
DESCRIPTION:This webinar will take place on Monday April 6\, 5–6 p.m. (PDT) | Tuesday April 7\, 9–10 a.m. (KST) \nWhy do people discount information when it comes from the “other side\,” even on basic\, nonpartisan facts? \nIn this webinar\, Shinnosuke Kikuchi\, a GPS faculty member\, will talk about “partisan disbelief in knowledge” — the tendency to assume one’s own political group is more knowledgeable than the out-party — and how that perception shapes how people learn from information. \nJoin us as Kikuchi highlights why polarization can persist even outside explicitly political issues\, and what this implies for communication and shared understanding. Woo Chang Kang of Korea University\, a 2023 visiting scholar at GPS\, will join Kikuchi to provide comments. \nThis public lecture series is organized by the Korea-Pacific Program at the UC San Diego School of Global Policy and Strategy (GPS). For more information on program activities\, please visit gps.ucsd.edu/kpp. \nIf you have any questions\, please contact GPS Events Coordinator Curtis Bruno.

SUMMARY:Aerospace Perspectives Series The Accelerating Pace of Physics AI Modeling and What It Means for the Aerospace Industry
DESCRIPTION:The last two years have witnessed a surge in the acceleration in our ability to generate\, curate\, and use data for large-scale training of modern physics-AI surrogates. Additionally\, physics-AI architectures are rapidly improving in their ability to accurately represent complex\, industrially relevant geometries and associated physics. Extrapolating into the future\, we must ask ourselves the question: “What does this mean for the future of aerospace engineering?” During this webinar\, Professor Alonso will describe the evolving landscape of artificial intelligence and machine learning methods as they relate to various applications in aerospace engineering\, including design space exploration\, optimization\, uncertainty quantification\, and data assimilation for digital twins. For example\, Luminary Cloud has developed SHIFT-CCA\, a physics-AI model for external aerodynamics (including the flowpath for the propulsion system) for the U.S. Air Force’s Collaborative Combat Aircraft. Using SHIFT-CCA\, Professor Alonso will discuss how such models can be used and the potential of Luminary Cloud’s SHIFT models for aerospace applications.

SUMMARY:Building a Validated Digital Twin for Fusion
DESCRIPTION:In this talk\, we will describe an AI-enabled digital twin of the DIII-D National Fusion Facility that transforms fusion energy research by reducing plasma simulation times from weeks to seconds. This effort is a collaboration between NVIDIA\, General Atomics\, and research partners including San Diego Supercomputer Center\, Argonne Leadership Computing Facility\, and NERSC. The project addresses fusion’s critical challenge of controlling plasma at hundreds of millions of degrees while predicting its behavior rapidly enough to maintain reactor stability. Built within NVIDIA Omniverse and powered by GPU-accelerated AI surrogate models—including EFIT for plasma equilibrium\, CAKE for plasma boundary prediction\, and ION ORB for ion heat density—the digital twin integrates real-time sensor data from the physical reactor with physics-based simulations and engineering models. Trained using the Polaris and Perlmutter supercomputers on decades of experimental data\, this interactive virtual environment enables 700 scientists from over 100 organizations to conduct risk-free “what-if” scenario testing and rapidly iterate reactor designs without endangering physical infrastructure. This “fusion accelerator” represents a paradigm shift from purely physics-driven experimentation to AI-augmented computational discovery\, significantly accelerating the path toward commercial fusion energy. \nInstructor Biography\nDr. Raffi Nazikian is the Senior Director for Data Science at General Atomics\, where he leads several R&D efforts including: perationalizing AI and digital twins to accelerate discovery and de-risk the path to commercial fusion. He is also a Fellow and twice Distinguished Lecturer of the American Physical Society; twice recipient of the Kaul Award for Excellence in Plasma Physics; author of over 260+ research papers; senior research manager and mentor.

SUMMARY:VibeCraft Power Hour
DESCRIPTION:VibeCraft is a recurring\, collaborative working session where ideas turn into experiments and experiments turn into real builds. Each session is shaped by the group. We review what is emerging\, explore new directions\, and decide together what is worth building next. \nThis is not a presentation or a passive meetup. It is an active\, hands-on environment where members contribute ideas\, react to each other’s work\, and influence the direction of future sessions. Expect open discussion\, live demos\, shared whiteboards\, and practical exploration. \nSessions may include live walkthroughs of tools\, automations\, and AI agents\, discussions around product and company design\, rapid demos from members\, and breakdowns of different approaches to building with modern AI systems. Topics evolve over time\, but the focus remains the same: learning by doing\, building in public\, and exploring a high-tech\, high-touch future grounded in curiosity\, collaboration\, and thoughtful design. \nCome ready to participate\, share what you are building\, and help shape what we explore next as a VibeCraft community.

SUMMARY:Coworking with some San Diego Digital Designers
DESCRIPTION:Sometimes you just want to be surrounded by percolating design minds. At this gathering\, bring your laptop and work on whatever’s on your plate that day — now surrounded by like minds. \nThis is your chance to see Figma on the next screen over. To chat through a perplexing interaction design. To focus\, inspired\, on your portfolio. \nAs with all SDDD events\, this is a casual\, personal\, and quiet-ish meeting of designers. Introvert- and extrovert-friendly. Coworking\, collaboration\, and conversation\, not networking. \nWe’ve got wifi and power (duh)\, I’ll brew up a fresh batch of coffee\, and we’ve got some tasty teas. What else do you need? (No\, srsly\, what else do you need?) \nPriority will be given to SDDD members (joining is easy — assuming you are a digital designer in San Diego — and free at sddd.org). \nHit up the chat here in Meetup — or #events in Slack — with any questions. \nLimited capacity\, so please RSVP accurately! 🙂 \nSee you there!

SUMMARY:TILOS-HDSI Seminar: Engineering Interpretable and Faithful AI Systems
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Large Language Models (LLMs) and Vision Language Models (VLMs) have achieved remarkable performance across a wide range of tasks. However\, their growing deployment has exposed fundamental limitations in faithfulness\, safety\, and transparency. In this talk\, I will present a unified perspective on addressing these challenges through principled model interventions and interpretable decision-making frameworks. I first introduce Information Pursuit (IP)\, an interpretable-by-design prediction framework that replaces opaque reasoning with a sequence of informative\, user-interpretable queries\, yielding concise explanations alongside accurate predictions. I then present Parsimonious Concept Engineering (PaCE)\, an approach that improves faithfulness and alignment by selectively removing undesirable internal activations\, mitigating hallucinations and biased language while preserving linguistic competence. Results across text\, vision\, and medical tasks illustrate how these ideas advance transparency without sacrificing performance. Together\, these contributions point toward a broader direction for building AI systems that are powerful\, faithful\, and aligned with human values. \nRené Vidal is the Penn Integrates Knowledge and Rachleff University Professor of Electrical and Systems Engineering and Radiology at the University of Pennsylvania\, where he directs the Center for Innovation in Data Engineering and Science (IDEAS) and serves as Co-Chair of Penn AI. He is also an Amazon Scholar\, Affiliated Chief Scientist at NORCE\, and former Associate Editor-in-Chief of IEEE Transactions on Pattern Analysis and Machine Intelligence. Professor Vidal’s research advances the mathematical foundations of deep learning and trustworthy AI\, with broad impact across computer vision and biomedical data science. His contributions have been recognized with major honors\, including the IEEE Edward J. McCluskey Technical Achievement Award\, the D’Alembert Faculty Award\, the J.K. Aggarwal Prize\, the ONR Young Investigator Award\, the NSF CAREER Award\, and best paper awards in machine learning\, computer vision\, signal processing\, control\, and medical robotics. He is a Fellow of ACM\, AIMBE\, IEEE\, and IAPR\, and a Sloan Fellow. \nZoom: https://bit.ly/TILOS-Seminars
