SUMMARY:Vibe Coding: Working With Data
DESCRIPTION:Right now your app probably forgets everything the moment you close it. Form submissions disappear. User preferences reset. Content you entered vanishes. That is because your prototype does not have a database. \nThis session teaches you how to add data persistence to your project. You will learn how to prompt the AI to set up a database\, connect it to your app\, and build the basic operations: create\, read\, update\, and delete. By the end\, your app will remember things. \n  \nWhat You Will Learn \n•      What a database is and why you need one. No jargon. Just a clear explanation of where data lives and how your app talks to it. \n•      Choosing a database. The beginner-friendly options and which one fits your project. We will cover Supabase\, Firebase\, and simple file-based storage. \n•      Connecting your app to a database. How to prompt the AI to set up the connection and get data flowing. \n•      CRUD operations. Create\, Read\, Update\, Delete. The four things every app needs to do with data. You will build all four. \n•      Structuring your data. How to think about what data you need to store and how to organize it so things do not get messy as your app grows. \n  \nWhat You Will Walk Away With \n•      A working database connected to your project. \n•      At least one feature that saves and retrieves data (a form that stores submissions\, a list that persists\, user preferences that stick). \n•      The confidence to add data storage to any future feature. \n  \nPrerequisites \nThis session assumes you have some experience building with AI coding tools. You will get the most out of it if: \n•      You have a working project with a user interface. \n•      Your project has at least one feature where data persistence would be useful (forms\, lists\, content\, user input). \n  \nWhat to Bring \n•      A laptop with a browser (all tools we use are web-based) \n•      A project you are working on or want to start \n•      Your project\, ideally in Cursor with version control set up \n  \nPart of the From Prototype to Product Series \nThis is Session 1 of 10 in the Vibe Coding: From Prototype to Product workshop series. Each session stands alone\, but the full series is designed as a progression from first build to finished product. \nFull series ticket holders get access to all 10 sessions\, weekly lab sessions for live troubleshooting\, recordings of every session\, and Founder Guide community access. Full series: $480 (10 sessions for the price of 8). Visit the series page for details. \nAlready have a series ticket? Enter your promo code at checkout to register for free. \n  \nAbout the Facilitator \nTodd Bashor is the founder of Founder Guide and has 25 years of experience building and scaling software products at ServiceNow\, FICO\, and Intuit. He co-founded NewRocket in 2017 and led it through hypergrowth to acquisition in 2022. He now works with early-stage founders on product validation\, traction\, and go-to-market strategy. \nTodd has been coding with AI for over two years and has mentored multiple non-technical founders through building their first MVPs with vibe coding tools.

SUMMARY:From Stem Cells to Organoids to Assembloids: An Ethical Discussion About Building Human Brain Circuits
DESCRIPTION:Featuring Sergiu P. Pasca\, Professor of Medicine and Director of the Stanford Brain Organogenesis Program\, Stanford University\nIn Discussion with John H. Evans\, Co-Director of the UC San Diego Institute for Practical Ethics\n\nComponents of a human brain can now be built and either kept in a dish or implanted in non-human animals\, with the goal of producing models for research on human neurological disease. This technology has developed extremely rapidly\, with the model more closely emulating the human brain: starting with stem cells being developed into what are called “human brain organoids\,” which are four-millimeter balls of human brain tissue from one location of the brain. \nNow we have “assembloids\,” which are combinations of connected organoids from different parts of the human brain. While this research area holds great promise for understanding human disease\, it is also ethically controversial. \nIn this special talk\, Sergiu Pasca\, world-wide leader in these technologies\, will bring us up to date on the latest science. John Evans\, who previously served on an ethics commission concerning organoids and assembloids\, will provide short comments. The keynote will be followed by a conversation between Evans and Pasca\, and we will then open the floor for questions from the audience. \nAbout Sergiu P. Pasca \nSergiu P. Pasca is the Kenneth T. Norris Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and the director of the Brain Organogenesis Program at Stanford University. He is the recipient of over 20 prestigious awards including\, most recently\, the National Institute of Mental Health MERIT Award. Pasca’s lab was the first to develop assembloids. He also successfully integrated human brain organoids into rats and developed a treatment for Timothy syndrome. Pasca has been a leader of the scientific community in creating a broader ethical debate about these technologies.

SUMMARY:VibeCraft Power Hour
DESCRIPTION:VibeCraft is a recurring\, collaborative working session where ideas turn into experiments and experiments turn into real builds. Each session is shaped by the group. We review what is emerging\, explore new directions\, and decide together what is worth building next. \nThis is not a presentation or a passive meetup. It is an active\, hands-on environment where members contribute ideas\, react to each other’s work\, and influence the direction of future sessions. Expect open discussion\, live demos\, shared whiteboards\, and practical exploration. \nSessions may include live walkthroughs of tools\, automations\, and AI agents\, discussions around product and company design\, rapid demos from members\, and breakdowns of different approaches to building with modern AI systems. Topics evolve over time\, but the focus remains the same: learning by doing\, building in public\, and exploring a high-tech\, high-touch future grounded in curiosity\, collaboration\, and thoughtful design. \nCome ready to participate\, share what you are building\, and help shape what we explore next as a VibeCraft community.

As such\, OT environments demand greater attention and specialized frameworks. \nHistorically\, industries such as petrochemical refining and nuclear power generation have implemented comprehensive safety and risk assessments\, covering every aspect of operations. These rigorous processes\, refined over decades\, have proven highly effective in ensuring safe\, stable\, and optimized production. OT computing systems within these facilities were traditionally isolated from corporate IT networks\, making their performance and risk profile well-understood and reliably managed through engineered specifications. \nHowever\, the situation has changed. Modern requirements for integration\, interoperability\, and remote accessibility mean that formerly isolated OT systems are now increasingly interconnected with IT networks and\, in many cases\, the wider Internet. This connectivity introduces new vulnerabilities\, exposing once-secure operational systems to external threats and sophisticated adversaries. \nThe authors propose a modern approach to risk management in OT\, one that recognizes these new realities. This approach emphasizes proactive measures to operationally protect legacy and modern OT systems alike from tampering\, intrusion\, and cyberattack―ensuring that critical infrastructure can remain resilient\, safe\, and reliable in a connected world. \nRegister now: https://events.zoom.us/ev/AupAfVrtE3nXwLREafG4oqyuDb-apQOmTNxsGNq0f7M5j6XtDN_S~ApZo12TBMVm4FG9RIUmDwufIfLoEHmEpJ0CdaWzOYn8V0–cjxjYN9W8ZjvtzU8BPVN6XyTIFbapbdfkgMRvpX0RjQ\n———————————————————\nBecoming a paid member is quick and easy (and helps us keep offering these educational opportunities!). SUMMARY:Ecology Seminar: Dr. Joshua Stewart\, OSU
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our last SIO Ecology Seminar of this academic year!!! \n“Why are so many whales dying? A bumpy ride ahead for the ocean’s conservation success stories” \nTalk Summary: Baleen whales are one of the most remarkable conservation success stories in the oceans. Many populations were hunted to the brink of extinction by commercial whaling fleets in the 20th century. After the cessation of (most) commercial whaling\, many populations have recovered to levels at or above their pre-whaling abundance. But in recent years\, these conservation successes have been called into question as hundreds of whales wash up dead on coastlines around the world and reproductive rates hit rock bottom. What’s going on? Why are so many whales dying? I’ll discuss my recent work on marine mammal population dynamics and the convergence of successful recoveries\, foundational ecological principles of density dependence\, natural variability in dynamic ocean environments\, and the effects of climate change. Gray whales—one of the most recognizable species on the west coast and an ongoing example of these dynamics—will feature prominently. I’ll share what I think this work means for the future of marine mammal management in the U.S. and globally\, and the bumpy ride ahead for scientists and managers as they navigate more frequent mortality events in these iconic species. \nJoshua Stewart is our proud SIO alum who conducted his dissertation research on manta and devil rays before adding marine mammals to his research portfolio as a postdoc at the NOAA Southwest Fisheries Science Center. He now leads the Ocean Ecology Lab at the Oregon State University Marine Mammal Institute. His research group is focused on understanding how natural environmental variability\, acute human impacts such as fishery bycatch and vessel strikes\, and climate change interact to drive the population dynamics and conservation outcomes of threatened species. \nCoffee and snacks provided! \nOpen to the public. Please sign in in the back of the room with ‘public interest’ under Affiliation.

SUMMARY:Geophysics & Planetary Seminar - 06/03 Dr. Jean-Bernard Minster
DESCRIPTION:Dear all\,\n\nThe next Geophysics and Planetary Seminar will be given by our very own Dr. Jean-Bernard Minster\, an Emeritus Distinguished Professor from IGPP Scripps. Bernard will review how NASA-led projects have advanced and revolutionized Solid Earth Science in recent decades.\n\nThe seminar will be held in the Munk Conference Room on Wednesday\, June 3rd\, at 3:00 p.m. Coffee\, snacks\, and teas will be provided before and after the seminar. This seminar will be in-person only.\n\nWe look forward to seeing you all!\n\n\nTitle: \nWhere has the time gone?\n\nAbstract:\n\n\nThe time scale for most Earth science projects is a few years\, and for disciplinary reviews up to a decade (e.g.\, “decadal studies”).  Funding cycles are often shorter\, with rhythms controlled by administrative and political structures.  But other time scales are critical in research\, associated with the development of technologies (e.g.\, satellite instrumentation)\, the general acceptance of new ideas (e.g.\, plate tectonics\, global warming)\, or the transition from initial research to societal applications (e.g.\, InSAR\, Lidar\, GPS). Some of the most interesting cases involve the transfer of technology from one discipline to another (“one researcher’s noise is another researcher’s signal”)\, or from academic research to commerce and industry.  Other cases involve the self-organization of the international research community and the deployment and cooperative operations of global networks. In this lighthearted account\, based in part on examples from NASA archives\, I review how\, in a very few decades\, NASA-led projects have advanced\, and in many cases revolutionized Solid Earth Science.\n\n—\n\nUpcoming GP seminar speakers:\n\n06/10 — Margaret Morris (UCSD)\n\n\n\n\nBest\,\nBaoning Wu and Harrison Burnett\nGP Seminar Committee

SUMMARY:Physical Oceanography Seminar: Dr. Andrew Thompson (Caltech)
DESCRIPTION:Sinks and Sources: Closing heat and buoyancy budgets at the Antarctic margins\nObservational and modeling studies have increased our understanding of how ocean dynamics impact the transport of warm waters towards Antarctic ice shelves. Yet these studies have largely focused on localized processes occurring at the continental shelf break. There is a growing appreciation that changes to ocean stratification over the continental shelf can influence these transport pathways by modifying mixing processes as well as the structure of boundary currents\, such as the Antarctic Slope Current and the Antarctic Coastal Current. This talk will first address the mechanisms that contribute to heat loss over the continental shelf and along the coast\, which shape both the heat supply to the continental shelf and large-scale climate properties in the Southern Ocean. Finally\, the talk will describe the three-dimensional structure of the West Antarctic stratification and overturning circulation. A key result is that inter-shelf-sea exchange forms a key component of a closed overturning circulation\, with parallels to the global ocean’s three-dimensional overturning circulation.

SUMMARY:AI and the Future of Work
DESCRIPTION:The future of work is being built in two places at once. \nInside the Enterprise\, AI is reshaping how teams operate\, what gets automated\, and where human judgment still matters most. Outside of it\, a new generation of founders is building AI-native companies that look nothing like the software era that preceded them. \nBoth groups are answering the same underlying question\, what does work look like when intelligence is abundant? \nThis event brings them in the same room\, with networking across both domains & breakouts to learn from peers. \nAgenda Below: \n\n12:00 – 12:15pm: Arrivals & Networking\n12:15 – 1:00pm: Keynote Panel\n\nAndy Palmer (Director Solutions Architects\, AWS)\nJustin Leytem (Director Data Science\, Intuit)\nTyler Norrish ( Director Sales\, Glean)\nJason Dods (Director • Info Mgmt and Tech\, Highspring)\n\n\n1:00 – 1:30pm: Intermission & Networking\n1:30 – 2:15pm: Breakouts\n\nBuilder Session with Matt Wolfe: (~1M subscribers on YouTube) for founders and builders shipping AI-native products. A working session on what’s possible right now and where the wedges are.\nExecutive Roundtable: A closed-door peer discussion led by Glean and Highspring’s Jake Shepherd\, Sr. Managing Partner. For senior leaders navigating AI strategy\, transformation\, and the org questions that come with it. Candid conversation with operators deploying AI at scale inside the Enterprise. Where it’s creating real leverage\, where it’s still theater\, and what the next 18 months could look like.\n\n\n2:15 – 3:00pm: Open networking to close\n\nAs always\, food and drink\, engaging conversation\, and incredible company will all be provided! \nSee you there!

SUMMARY:The AGI Transition: How AI Affects Work and Life — Virtual Workshop Series
DESCRIPTION:A free\, public workshop—no technical background needed\n\nArtificial intelligence is no longer just getting better at narrow tasks—it’s beginning to look general. Many researchers believe we’re entering the early stages of the AGI transition: a period where AI systems start to match or exceed human abilities across a wide range of domains. \nThis workshop explores what AGI actually means\, how to think about it intuitively (without hype or jargon)\, and what this transition could mean for your job\, your relationships\, and your day-to-day life—much sooner than most people expect. \nTogether\, we’ll explore questions like: \nWhat is AGI?\nHow do experts define artificial general intelligence\, and how is it different from today’s AI tools? \nWork & Jobs:\nWhich kinds of jobs are already being automated or transformed—and which ones experts believe are most likely to remain resilient? \nHuman Connection:\nHow is AI starting to replace or supplement roles once filled by coworkers\, friends\, tutors\, therapists\, and companions? \nWhat you’ll get: \n\nA clear\, beginner-friendly explanation of AGI and why it matters\nReal-world examples of how AI is already reshaping work and social life\nLive demos that highlight both impressive capabilities and emerging risks\nInteractive discussion and exercises to test your own intuitions about the future\n\nCome ready to grapple with one of the biggest transitions humanity may ever face—a shift that could redefine not just how we work\, but how we relate to each other\, find meaning\, and navigate a world increasingly shaped by intelligent machines.\nThis is the second session in a six-part virtual series. Each workshop stands on its own and is free to attend. Future sessions: 6/9 Superintelligent AI\, 6/11 Intro to AI Evals\, 6/16 Data and Privacy in the Age of AI\, 6/18 AI Policy and Governance Overview
