SUMMARY:Let's Cowork in PB!
DESCRIPTION:Tired of working from your actual home\, and want a change of scenery? New to San Diego and want to meet new people? Come join us at our weekly coworking session. \nIt’s a pretty casual affair with new people every week\, some regulars\, and some just passing through. We take over a few tables at Second Nature in Pacific Beach and do a bit of work and a bit of getting to know each other. Come and go as you please\, but do remember to bring your laptop (charged as plugs are few). \nIt’s free to join\, but ideally grab some coffee or lunch & tip the servers. \nA note about RSVPs: \nThis group aims to help people meet in a small group. The max amount of people for this event is 12 people. We close the RSVP list on Mondays if there is a waitlist\, and if you can’t make it we do kindly ask that you change your status as soon as you know to give someone else a chance to attend. Those on the waitlist will receive a note on the day of the meetup letting them know if there is space or not. \nIf you sign up\, but do not attend\, you will be marked as a No Show. People with 5 No Shows will be removed from the group.

SUMMARY:Value Creation Process + Pitch Session
DESCRIPTION:February: The Value Creation Process — Designing the Engine of Your Bright Business\nMove beyond “hero mode” and design a repeatable\, profitable\, and calm delivery system.\nMany businesses fail not because they lack a great product\, but because they lack a designed system to deliver it. They operate in a state of “constant noise”—bottlenecks\, pricing uncertainty\, and resource fragility. This is the “Monkey Mind” of business: unsettled\, uncontrollable\, and reactive. \nIn February\, we transition from the “Validated Solution” into the Value Creation Process\, a core component of the Bright Business Operating System (BBOS). This is where we turn a validated idea into a high-performance engine. We stop guessing and start mapping the mechanics of value through three essential matrices.\nThe Three Pillars of Value Creation \nUsing the 2×2 Human-Centered Matrix\, we will brainstorm and redesign the three critical areas that move your business from a “Current State” of stress to a “Future State” of scalable impact: \n1. The Operations Flow Matrix (Efficiency & Quality) \n• The “How”: How do we create value that solves a pain prospects are willing to pay for?\n• The Goal: Map your Value Creation System to eliminate bottlenecks and ensure every touchpoint is intuitive and delightful. We move from “Hero Mode” (manual effort) to “System Mode” (repeatable excellence). \n2. The Pricing Matrix (Monetization Strategy)\n• The “Value”: How do we price the transformation we provide?\n• The Goal: Align your price with the depth of the problem you solve. We will explore monetization strategies that reflect the true worth of your solution\, ensuring profitability that fuels your purpose rather than draining your resources. \n3. The Resources Matrix (Human\, Financial & IP)\n• The “What”: What fuel does your engine require?\n• The Goal: Identify the human talent\, financial capital\, and intellectual property (IP) needed to sustain growth. We map these resources to ensure your business is resilient\, not fragile. \nWhy This Matters: The Science of Alignment\nResearch by McKinsey indicates that organizations that translate strategy into clear operational metrics and accountability structures are significantly more likely to sustain long-term performance. Furthermore\, Deloitte reports that purpose-driven companies see higher market share gains and grow three times faster on average than their competitors. \nYour Transformation\nThis workshop is about Self-Actualization for your business. By designing these matrices\, you fulfill the foundational needs of safety and reliability\, allowing you to ascend to a state of “Being More.”\nJoin us to transition your business from a source of stress into a calm\, balanced instrument of alignment and profit. Stop chasing the “rat race” and start leading your engine. \n⚡ Bright Business 555 Pitch™ \nFive Slides. Five Minutes. Five Voices. We feature five presenters delivering their problem\, solution\, proof\, and call-to-action. It’s fast-paced\, high-value\, and full of opportunities for leads\, partnerships\, and fresh ideas. \n🚀 Why Join Bright Business Club? \nJoining means you’re not just attending events—you’re joining a community of leaders. We provide the structure\, environment\, and connections that help real businesses grow through actionable frameworks and real collaborations. \n✅ Action Steps \n1. Register for the event.\n2. Apply to pitch in the Bright Business 555 Pitch™ (limited to 5 presenters).\n3. Invite your network—be intentional and expand our community together. \nDisclaimers\nBright Business is not a party to\, does not broker\, or endorse any transaction among participants. SUMMARY:Meet the VC with Jon Bassett\, Garrett Smith\, and Nick Mourlas
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for our Innovation at the Edge Speaker Series brought to you by the Office of Innovation & Commercialization.\n\n\n\nThe Office of Innovation & Commercialization’s Innovation at the Edge is an incredible speakers series that is your invite to hear from founders\, researchers\, venture capitalists\, distinguished alumni\, and creative leaders as they converge to nurture your entrepreneurial spirit. \nThis month for Meet the VC\, we welcome Jon Bassett — and we’re excited to expand the conversation with a powerhouse panel of venture and innovation leaders. Joining Jon are Dr. Garrett Smith and Dr. Nicholas (Nick) Mourlas of ReefHaven Ventures\, bringing deep experience across venture capital\, entrepreneurship\, corporate innovation\, and healthcare investing. \nJon Bassett is a Managing Partner at NextGen Venture Partners\, an early-stage venture capital fund focused on backing exceptional founders at the very beginning of their journeys. He is also a Partner and Head of Private Investment Research at Brown Advisory\, a $180 billion registered investment advisor\, where he helps shape private market investment strategy. \nAlong the way\, Jon has learned that careers are rarely linear — he landed his first job in venture capital via a circuitous route that started with looking for a grant writer on Craiglist. Today\, he also advises the U.S. Tennis Association’s Ventures Committee and serves on the investment committee of a European pre-seed venture fund. Jon is passionate about helping students see that curiosity\, hustle\, and relationships often matter just as much as credentials. Jon lives in North County San Diego with his wife\, four young children\, and their dog\, and can usually be found playing pickleball or coaching his kids’ sports teams. \nDr. Garrett Smith brings more than two decades of experience as serial healthcare entrepreneur\, academic and corporate innovator\, and venture capitalist. He is Managing Partner at ReefHaven Ventures\, where he invests at the intersection of medical technology\, life sciences\, robotics\, and artificial intelligence. Dr. Smith previously served as CEO of CrownPoint Medical and has held senior leadership roles at Johnson & Johnson in partnering and investing with start-ups. He held an Investment Director role at MedeonBio where he was responsible for seed through Series B medtech investments\, and since has invested in multiple start-ups as an angel investor. As a serial entrepreneur\, he has co-founded two start-ups that have been acquired by AbbVie and Viatris for over $600M. He holds a Ph.D. in Bioengineering from UC San Diego\, and completed a BioDesign Fellowship at Stanford. \nNicholas (Nick) Mourlas\, Ph.D.\, is an Investment Partner at ReefHaven Ventures\, where he invests in early-stage medical technology and life science companies operating at the intersection of advanced engineering\, biology\, robotics\, and artificial intelligence. He brings more than 25 years of experience as a repeat founder\, corporate innovation leader\, and investor. Dr. Mourlas previously served as Head of Johnson & Johnson Innovation – JLABS San Diego and has held senior innovation leadership roles at Johnson & Johnson and PARC (a Xerox company). He has founded and led multiple medical device companies acquired by Johnson & Johnson\, Medtronic\, and Integra LifeSciences. He holds a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University and was the John B. Simpson Biomedical Innovation Technology Fellow during the inaugural year of the Stanford Biodesign Fellowship Program. \nWhether you’re a student with a burgeoning business concept or a seasoned professional seeking fresh insights\, our series is your platform for education\, connection\, and bringing innovative ideas to life. Immerse yourself in this transformative community and unlock your entrepreneurial potential. \n———————— \n\n\n\n\nDirections to the Design & Innovation Building \nThe event is located on the second floor (room 208) of the Design and Innovation Building (DIB). The entrances are located across from the Structural Materials and Engineering building or next to the UC San Diego Central Campus Station bus and trolley stop. \n———————— \nMTS Trolley \nThe easiest way to get to the DIB is by taking the MTS trolley UC San Diego Blue Line and getting off at the UC San Diego Central Campus stop. The trolley stop is a short 1 minute walk to the DIB. \nParking \nPublic transportation is highly recommended as parking is limited on campus. If you plan to drive to campus\, please give yourself plenty of time. You can download the ParkMobile app to pay for your space digitally once you find a spot. \n\nP510 – Pay and Display\, Northside of the DIB *closest to the DIB*\nGilman Parking Structure\, Southwest side of the DIB

SUMMARY:2026 VTS Tech Talk: Scalable Data Exchange Between Autonomous Vehicle Fleets and Cloud Infrastructure
DESCRIPTION:Autonomous vehicle fleets generate massive volumes of sensor and operational data that must be reliably transferred to cloud infrastructure to support development\, validation\, and production operations. Designing scalable data exchange mechanisms is challenging due to the large number of vehicles involved\, changing network conditions\, and different requirements on data volume\, latency\, and reliability. \nThis talk presents a system-level view of data exchange between autonomous vehicle fleets and cloud infrastructure. It explains how different data transfer approaches such as physical media\, high-speed wired connections\, and cellular networks are used together to support large-scale fleet operations. The talk also describes how data handling can be adapted per vehicle based on its role and operating mode\, enabling large-volume data uploads\, timely reporting of safety-critical events\, and continuous fleet health monitoring within a unified system. Key challenges related to reliability\, security\, and scaling are discussed\, along with practical lessons learned from operating real-world autonomous driving systems.

SUMMARY:Optimization for ML and AI Seminar: Extended Convex Lifting for Policy Optimization in Control
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Direct policy search has achieved great empirical success in reinforcement learning. Many recent studies have revisited its theoretical foundation for continuous control\, which reveals elegant nonconvex geometry in various benchmark problems. In this talk\, we introduce an Extended Convex Lifting (ECL) framework\, which reveals hidden convexity in classical optimal and robust control problems from a modern optimization perspective. Our ECL offers a bridge between nonconvex policy optimization and convex reformulations. Despite non-convexity and non-smoothness\, the existence of an ECL not only reveals that minimizing the original function is equivalent to a convex problem\, but also certifies a class of first-order non-degenerate stationary points to be globally optimal. This ECL framework encompasses many benchmark control problems\, including LQR\, LQG\, state-feedback\, and output-feedback H-infinity robust control. We believe that the ECL framework may be of independent interest for analyzing nonconvex problems beyond control. \n\nYang Zheng is an Assistant Professor in the ECE Department at UC San Diego. His research focuses on control theory\, convex and nonconvex optimization\, and their applications to autonomous vehicles and traffic systems. He received his DPhil (Ph.D.) in Engineering Science from the University of Oxford in 2019\, and his B.E. and M.S. degrees from Tsinghua University in 2013 and 2015\, respectively. His work has been recognized with several awards\, including the 2019 European Ph.D. Award on Control for Complex and Heterogeneous Systems\, the 2022 Best Paper Award from IEEE Transactions on Control of Network Systems\, the 2023 Best Graduate Teacher Award from UC San Diego’s ECE Department\, the 2024 NSF CAREER Award\, and the 2025 Donald P.
