SUMMARY:ISACA San Diego Meeting: Introducing an AI RMF for Responsible Innovation
DESCRIPTION:Whether you like it or not\, Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies are increasingly integrated into our daily lives. It has strong potential to transform our society\, reshape industries and decision-making processes\, drive inclusive economic growth\, and foster scientific advancement. Organizations must proactively address the risks associated with their design\, development\, and implementation. \nThis presentation will introduce the AI Risk Management Framework\, published by NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology) in January 2023. We’ll explore key components of the framework and related guidance with applicable international standards\, guidelines\, and practices. Attendees will gain insights into balancing innovation with responsibility\, ensuring that AI systems are trustworthy\, and how risk management will help to cultivate public trust. \nSPEAKER: Jennifer Cheung – Cybersecurity Researcher Scientist and Engineer \nJennifer Cheung is a mathematician who became a cybersecurity engineer and has been working in the field since August 2014. SUMMARY:Cybersecurity – How to Better Prepare for DoD Cybersecurity Requirements
DESCRIPTION:CYBERSECURITY – HOW TO BETTER PREPARE FOR DOD CYBERSECURITY REQUIREMENTS \nCOURSE DESCRIPTION \nJoin the East County SBDC for must-have cyber compliance information. This course was designed in partnership with CMTC (California Manufacturing Technology Center) to provide an overview of the current standards from the NIST 800-171 guidelines and the DFARS Interim rule\, guidance towards how to become cyber-compliant as well as how to select third parties for assistance and what to be aware of with the introduction of the Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification (CMMC). \nWhat to Expect: \n\nUnderstanding of NIST 800-171 and DFARS Requirements: Participants will gain a comprehensive overview of the cybersecurity standards and regulations that are critical for businesses working with the Department of Defense (DoD) or as part of the defense supply chain. The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Special Publication 800-171 provides guidelines to protect controlled unclassified information (CUI) in non-federal systems and organizations. The Defense Federal Acquisition Regulation Supplement (DFARS) Interim rule mandates adherence to these standards\, and this training aims to clarify these requirements.\nGuidance on Becoming Cyber-Compliant: The course offers practical advice and steps for businesses to achieve and maintain compliance with these cybersecurity standards. It addresses the processes involved in assessing current cybersecurity postures\, identifying gaps\, and implementing the necessary controls and measures to protect sensitive information. This guidance is crucial for businesses looking to secure their operations and maintain eligibility for DoD contracts.\nAdvice on Selecting Third Parties and Understanding CMMC: With the introduction of the Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification (CMMC)\, the course also provides insights into the evolving landscape of cybersecurity compliance. It offers advice on how to select reliable third-party services for cybersecurity assistance\, ensuring that these providers are capable of meeting the specific requirements of NIST 800-171\, DFARS\, and CMMC. Understanding the criteria for CMMC and its impact on future contracts is vital for businesses aiming to participate in the defense supply chain.\n\nINSTRUCTOR \nMike Olivier \nWith 30 years of experience in information technology\, Mike Olivier brings his expertise to system security planning. As a small business owner working in the federal space both as a prime contractor and as a subcontractor\, he understands the realities of running a small business. His security experience includes providing system engineering support in developing the security model for the US Navy\, NIWC – San Diego\, Advance Container Security Device\, the security architecture for wireless tactical networks\, and first responder emergency management networks; to name a few. This experience in planning\, and in dealing with system security compliance in commercial and federal systems allowed for a commonsense approach – one that’s rooted in the fact that businesses must survive while meeting their compliance requirements. He’s the author of several articles that focus on cybersecurity in terms of its impact on business. He holds the title of CMMC (Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification)\, AB Registered Practitioner\, and a certified PMP through PMI. Mike also has a BA from UCLA\, and an MBA and a Master of Science in cybersecurity from National University in San Diego. \nCOURSE FORMAT  \nThis session is available as a live webinar. Upon sign-up\, you’ll receive a link to the webinar. \n\nInstructions:Zoom invitations to access the webinar will be sent to all registrants the day-before and the morning-of the event. These often land in the spam/junk folders so please check there if it is not found in the email inbox. \n\nRegistration Policies: \nRegistration and Fees: Payment of seminar fees may be made by check\, money order or credit card. SUMMARY:Machine Learning Case Studies
DESCRIPTION:Machine Learning Case Studies\nIn-person recommended \nTypical books and classes will teach you how to train a linear regression or a deep neural network model\, but they will leave many important questions unanswered. Questions like: \n\nIs this problem a fit for ML?\nHow do I formulate this as a modeling task?\nHow do I measure performance?\nWhat should I do to try to improve my model?\nAm I done\, or should I keep trying to improve my model?\n\nWe are developing a new tool for training data scientists and ML engineers to answer these questions using ML case studies. This session will be a group discussion. Try to attend in person if you are able. We are still refining the teaching process\, and it won’t be the same for remote attendees. \nThis month will be another opportunity to practice understanding parts of the ML lifecycle. Attendees will discuss and brainstorm individually and in groups. This will be an exercise in critical thinking. \nWe invite learners\, mentors\, and managers to all participate\, and to provide feedback to help us refine the process. \n* Please make sure to read the instructions for joining the event below. \nAgenda: \n\n12:00 – 1:15 pm — Case study presentation and group discussions (both in-person & zoom\, but in-person recommended)\nTime permitting — Additional Q&A\, networking\n\nLinks to notes/slides and videos of prior meetups are available on the SDML GitHub repo https://github.com/SanDiegoMachineLearning/talks \nLocation:\nWe have started meeting at our new location at Aquillius. \nPlease Note: There are two steps required to join the online meetup: \n\nYou must go to our Slack community and ask for the password for the meeting. Link to join is below.\nYou must have a Zoom login in order to join the event. A free Zoom account will work. If you get an error message joining the Zoom\, please login to your account on the Zoom website then try again.\nUse this Zoom link: https://us06web.zoom.us/j/82891977558\n\nCommunity:\nJoin our slack channel for questions and discussion about what’s new in ML:\nhttps://join.slack.com/t/sdmachinelearning/shared_invite/zt-33z4811de-F_YKuCsQH1ev3TLSnQQfgQ

SUMMARY:Diving deeper into software development discussions
DESCRIPTION:• What we’ll do\nCome join in discussions about Vim\, Emacs\, Linux\, Elixir\, Erlang\, OTP\, Lisp\, Haskell\, Ruby\, Javascript\, Functional Programming\, Object Oriented Programming\, Blockchain\, HashGraph\, Distributed Systems\, Decentralized Systems\, and whatever peaks your interest. \n• What to bring\nA laptop\, good questions\, exciting ideas\, an open mind and a positive attitude. \n• Where to meet\nMeet by the corn hole game in the back and look for others with laptops.\nAsk for others that are there for the software discussion group. \n• Alternate location\nSome nights the Rabbit Hole has live music. I was not able to pin down\nan exact schedule\, just sometimes we would show up and there would be a band but most times there was not. As an alternate location on live music nights the discussion group could be moved just down the street to Lestats coffee shop. They have great coffee and a nice atmosphere for hanging out and discussing software. \n• Important to know\nThis is a self organizing open discussion group that is meant to be organic\, with no main speaker or leader. It is just a time and a place for like minded people to come together to talk about software. \n• Background\nWhen I was staying in SD (Jan-Aug 2018) I was teaching software development at UCSD and the Meetup gave my cohort a space to dive further into topics that the curriculum did not allow time for. When the class was over and I went back to traveling full time\, I thought it would be an interesting experiment to leave the Meetup going and see if people would still gather to discuss software without someone to lead it. I liked the idea of a group that did not require some one to always lead it. A lot off Meetups I have been to before were always one or two people doing a lot of work to organize and put on talks but everyone else just shows up to consume and doesn’t really participate that much. Kinda like going to a movie\, in a way. The idea for this group is that it is what people make it. You get out of it what you put into it. It’s great that people are showing up still and I hope you have some great discussions. When I get back to San Diego (planning on a handful of times a year) and there is a meeting I will stop by and hang out and invite my cohort of previous students.

SUMMARY:AI and the Intelligence Explosion
DESCRIPTION:This free\, non-technical workshop is open to anyone who’s ever wondered where artificial intelligence might ultimately lead and wants to explore the topic in a relaxed\, fun\, and interactive setting. \nWe’ll review the history of Artificial Intelligence\, emphasizing the astonishing progress made over just the last two years. \nFrom there we’ll dive into big-picture ideas that excite (and sometimes unsettle) researchers: the singularity\, the intelligence explosion hypothesis\, and the possibility of superintelligence. Using playful thought experiments and small-group activities\, we’ll unpack why reward hacking\, instrumental convergence\, and rapid self-improvement matter—even if you’ve never written a line of code. \nExpect approachable explanations\, live demos\, collaborative forecasts\, and plenty of room for questions. Come curious; leave with a clearer picture of where AI could be heading and how we might navigate the journey together.
