SUMMARY:Linux Tools for Text Processing (COMPLECS)
DESCRIPTION:Many computational and data processing workloads require pre-processing input files to get the data into a format compatible with the user’s application and/or post-processing output files to extract key results for further analysis. While these operations could be done by hand\, they tend to be time-consuming\, tedious\, and\, worst of all\, error-prone. In this session\, we cover the Linux tools awk\, sed\, grep\, sort\, head\, tail\, cut\, paste\, cat\, and split\, which will help users to automate repetitive tasks easily. We conclude by showing how large language models (LLMs) such as ChatGPT could be used to write commands using these tools. \n—\nCOMPLECS (COMPrehensive Learning for end-users to Effectively utilize CyberinfraStructure) is a new SDSC program where training will cover non-programming skills needed to effectively use supercomputers. Topics include parallel computing concepts\, Linux tools and bash scripting\, security\, batch computing\, how to get help\, data management and interactive computing. Each session offers 1 hour of instruction followed by a 30-minute Q&A. COMPLECS is supported by NSF award 2320934.

SUMMARY:Engineers for Exploration\, a Chancellor's Associates Colloquium
DESCRIPTION:Engineers for Exploration (E4E) brings together students\, scientists and explorers to build technologies that help us see – and hear – the planet in new ways. From coral reefs to coastal surf zones to the forests of the Amazon\, E4E develops innovative computer systems that close critical gaps in conservation and exploration. Collaborating with partners such as the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance\, Scripps Institution of Oceanography\, The Nature Conservancy and the National Geographic Society\, these projects move beyond the lab and into the field\, where they are already shaping how researchers understand fragile ecosystems. \nThis colloquium will spotlight two projects\, SmartFin and Acoustic Species Detection\, that ask a deceptively simple question: What happens when we give nature new ways to speak to us\, and new ways for us to listen?

SUMMARY:[Online] Technical? Non-Technical? Both! ~ Andrea Goulet
DESCRIPTION:Technical? Non-Technical? Both! ~ Presented by Andrea Goulet\nAs humans\, we love to categorize the world around us. It helps us make sense of complexity and make quick decisions. But these identity boxes can become confining. They limit our ideas of what we are capable of and can lead to rivalries that get in the way of collaboration\, creativity\, and innovation. \nIn this inspirational talk\, Andrea Goulet\, a noted expert on empathy and communication in the software industry\, will focus on one false binary that runs rampant in tech companies — the “soft skill” / ”hard skill” divide. She’ll share her personal journey and provide concrete ideas for helping you break free from five frustration factors: social conditioning\, perfectionism\, confidence gaps\, fixed mindset\, and imposter syndrome. Each week\, two founders take the stage to pitch their business for six minutes\, followed by 20 minutes of honest\, constructive feedback from a room full of fellow entrepreneurs\, business professionals\, students\, and curious minds.\nThis isn’t a pitch competition — it’s a collaborative environment where ideas are refined\, challenges are unpacked\, and next steps become clearer. SUMMARY:VibeCraft Power Hour
DESCRIPTION:VibeCraft is a recurring\, collaborative working session where ideas turn into experiments and experiments turn into real builds. Each session is shaped by the group. We review what is emerging\, explore new directions\, and decide together what is worth building next. \nThis is not a presentation or a passive meetup. It is an active\, hands-on environment where members contribute ideas\, react to each other’s work\, and influence the direction of future sessions. Expect open discussion\, live demos\, shared whiteboards\, and practical exploration. \nSessions may include live walkthroughs of tools\, automations\, and AI agents\, discussions around product and company design\, rapid demos from members\, and breakdowns of different approaches to building with modern AI systems. Topics evolve over time\, but the focus remains the same: learning by doing\, building in public\, and exploring a high-tech\, high-touch future grounded in curiosity\, collaboration\, and thoughtful design. \nCome ready to participate\, share what you are building\, and help shape what we explore next as a VibeCraft community.

SUMMARY:San Diego AI Circle
DESCRIPTION:San Diego AI Circle is a curated group of highly technical builders working at the edge of deep learning and agentic systems. We meet in person to share what we’re building\, trade notes on the latest advancements\, and learn from / collaborate with other serious practitioners. \nAs AI tooling accelerates\, small teams can increasingly outpace large organizations by shipping focused\, niche products quickly. Meanwhile\, much of San Diego’s best technical talent is distributed across large companies\, labs\, and teams—so finding the right collaborators can be difficult. \nThis Circle exists to solve that: a central hub for builders to learn from each other\, get high-quality feedback\, and meet potential collaborators and cofounders. \nWho it’s for \n\nEngineers and researchers building with DL/LLMs/agents (or shipping ML products) in their domain.\nFounders and technical leaders applying AI to real use cases.\nPeople who bring projects\, experiments\, challenges\, and learnings (not just ideas).\n\nWhat to expect \n\nProject shares + technical discussion\nCollaboration / cowork-style build time (demos\, debugging\, and challenges)\nA curated\, high-signal room\n\nSpace is limited. If this sounds like you\, request to join and come to our first kickoff. Our first topic will focus on Personal AI agents and Open Claw. \nPARKING\nPark around the back of the building and come in the back door. You don’t need to pay for parking\, you can validate parking inside by scanning a QR code and sharing your license plate.
