This workshop teaches a repeatable process for identifying and framing meaningful opportunities using Human Insights (HI) amplified by Artificial Intelligence (AI). \nThrough practical tools\, collaborative exercises\, and real-time AI exploration\, participants learn how to investigate a problem before jumping to solutions. You’ll examine what you think you know\, gather human and AI-supported research\, identify the people and perspectives that matter\, and translate what you learn into a clear\, actionable problem statement. Using HI × AI\, you’ll challenge assumptions\, uncover new perspectives\, and determine which opportunities are worth pursuing before investing time\, money\, or resources in a solution. \nThe result is a more thoughtful way to move from uncertainty to opportunity—with greater clarity\, confidence\, and purpose. \nRefreshments generously provided by Ike’s Sandwiches. \n\nAbout the Speaker: \nKevin Popović | Founder\, The Idea Guy® | /kevinpopovic \nKevin Popović is The Idea Guy®\, a strategist\, educator\, author\, and speaker who helps people identify the right problems\, create better ideas\, and turn those ideas into meaningful innovation. \nHe is the creator of AMPLIFIED!\, an approach to innovation that integrates Human Insights (HI) with Artificial Intelligence (AI) to improve how people understand problems\, make decisions\, and create solutions. His work is grounded in a simple principle: human insight provides the context\, empathy\, judgment\, and meaning; AI amplifies our ability to research\, explore\, create\, and refine. Together\, HI × AI can make innovation more thoughtful\, repeatable\, and effective. \nKevin is also pursuing his doctorate at National University\, where his research examines how organizations can integrate HI × AI to improve problem identification and innovation practice. His research explores the human and organizational conditions that influence innovation adoption\, implementation\, and sustained impact—providing an empirical foundation for the ideas and practices behind AMPLIFIED! \nAs the former Education Manager at UC San Diego’s Design Lab\, Kevin has taught design and innovation at UC San Diego\, developed idea incubators at San Diego State University\, and advised organizations ranging from startups to Fortune 500 companies. \nThrough keynotes\, workshops\, courses\, and consulting\, Kevin helps students\, entrepreneurs\, leaders\, and organizations strengthen their creative confidence and innovation capability—combining what people understand with what AI can amplify to solve problems that matter. \n\nDirections \nThis event is located on the first floor of the Design and Innovation Building (DIB). The entrances are located across from the Structural Materials and Engineering building or next to the UC San Diego Central Campus Station bus and trolley stop. \nLearn more about getting to the DIB\, including parking\, directions\, and maps. \n\nMTS Trolley \nThe easiest way to get to the DIB is by taking the MTS trolley UC San Diego Blue Line and getting off at the UC San Diego Central Campus stop. The trolley stop is a short 1 minute walk to the DIB. \nParking \nPublic transportation is highly recommended as parking is limited on campus. If you plan to drive to campus\, please give yourself plenty of time. SUMMARY:For Future Generations: Why San Diego Climate Researchers are Studying Solar Geoengineering
DESCRIPTION:This event brings local climate researchers and the San Diego community together for an honest\, science-grounded conversation about solar geoengineering— an emerging and hotly debated approach to addressing some of the impacts of climate change. Solar geoengineering refers to a set of proposed\, large-scale methods to intentionally reflect more sunlight back into space to cool the planet. \nThe session will explore why researchers are studying these approaches now and what that research could mean for future generations facing a changing climate. As research and public attention grow\, so do important questions about what these approaches could and could not do\, what risks and uncertainties they carry\, and who should have a say in how they are researched and governed. \nThis session is jointly presented by the Alliance for Just Deliberation on Solar Geoengineering (DSG) and the Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO) at UC San Diego. DSG is a U.S.-based nonprofit working internationally to broaden access to information about solar geoengineering and elevate the voices of those most impacted by climate change\, and SIO is  one of the world’s leading earth science research centers. \nThe session will cover: \n\n\nWhy we are talking about solar geoengineering \n\n\nWhat different types of solar geoengineering are being researched \n\n\nWhat Scripps researchers are learning about it \n\n\nWhy proper global governance of this is so important \n\n\nHow it fits into the broader climate portfolio \n\n\nAttendees will hear directly from local researchers and practitioners (from the Ricke Lab\, Giving Green\, and more) and have the opportunity to ask questions. Join us at the UCSD Climate Action Lab to learn more on October 2nd. A light vegetarian lunch will be provided. \nTransportation \nWe encourage attendees to take public transportation or carpool where possible. UCSD is served by the Blue Line Trolley\, which now runs directly onto campus with stops near the Scholars Drive area. There are also several MTS bus routes serving La Jolla\, including Route 30 (UTC\, La Jolla\, Pacific Beach\, Old Town\, downtown San Diego) and Route 41 (VA Hospital\, UTC\, Clairemont\, Fashion Valley). The closest option is Scholars Parking Lot at 9655 Scholars Dr N\, La Jolla\, CA 92093. Visitor spots (marked with a V) run for $4.50/hour with a $36 daily maximum. \nFinding the Climate Action Lab \nIt can be a bit tricky to find the room if you’ve never visited the Climate Action Lab\, but this tutorial helps: https://luma.com/y4e7ssgg. \nIf you are coming from Scholars Drive N\, head up the stairs and look for the big windows and wooden benches in a small pavilion past the grassy area. If you find yourself at the food outlet Fan-Fan\, keeping walking west down the walkway and make an immediate right. \nBy registering for this event\, you agree to share your registration information with the organizers of San Diego Climate Week and our event platform partner\, Climatebase. SUMMARY:The AGI Transition: How AI Affects Work and Life
DESCRIPTION:A free\, public workshop—no technical background needed\nArtificial intelligence is no longer just getting better at narrow tasks—it’s beginning to look general. Many researchers believe we’re entering the early stages of the AGI transition: a period where AI systems start to match or exceed human abilities across a wide range of domains.\nThis workshop explores what AGI actually means\, how to think about it intuitively (without hype or jargon)\, and what this transition could mean for your job\, your relationships\, and your day-to-day life—much sooner than most people expect.\nTogether\, we’ll explore questions like:\nWhat is AGI?\nHow do experts define artificial general intelligence\, and how is it different from today’s AI tools?\nWork & Jobs:\nWhich kinds of jobs are already being automated or transformed—and which ones experts believe are most likely to remain resilient?\nHuman Connection:\nHow is AI starting to replace or supplement roles once filled by coworkers\, friends\, tutors\, therapists\, and companions?\nWhat you’ll get: \n\nA clear\, beginner-friendly explanation of AGI and why it matters\nReal-world examples of how AI is already reshaping work and social life\nLive demos that highlight both impressive capabilities and emerging risks\nInteractive discussion and exercises to test your own intuitions about the future\n\nCome ready to grapple with one of the biggest transitions humanity may ever face—a shift that could redefine not just how we work\, but how we relate to each other\, find meaning\, and navigate a world increasingly shaped by intelligent machines.
