SUMMARY:1 Million Cups
DESCRIPTION:1 Million Cups is a weekly event for entrepreneurs\, by entrepreneurs — built on the belief that conversations over coffee can accelerate innovation. Each week\, two founders take the stage to pitch their business for six minutes\, followed by 20 minutes of honest\, constructive feedback from a room full of fellow entrepreneurs\, business professionals\, students\, and curious minds.\nThis isn’t a pitch competition — it’s a collaborative environment where ideas are refined\, challenges are unpacked\, and next steps become clearer. Attendees are encouraged to ask thoughtful questions\, offer insights\, and share resources that help presenters grow. \nWhether you’re launching your first startup\, scaling your next venture\, or just looking to get plugged into your local entrepreneurial ecosystem\, 1 Million Cups is where you’ll find the energy\, perspective\, and community you need to move forward. \nCome for the coffee. Stay for the conversation. Leave with a better business.

SUMMARY:May 27 - Perceptron AI and FiftyOne for Video Understanding Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a hands-on virtual session on May 27 exploring video-native multimodal AI and how to integrate cutting-edge video understanding models into your computer vision workflows. \nDate\, Time and Location \nMay 27\, 2026\n9:00 AM – 11:00 AM PST\nOnline. Register for Zoom! \nVideo-Native Multimodal Models for Video and Image Understanding \nIn this 20-minute talk\, Akshat will introduce Perceptron’s latest release\, a video-native multimodal model that matches or exceeds frontier models from Google and Alibaba on video and image understanding at a fraction of their inference cost. He’ll walk through the capabilities that move the needle for real video workloads: temporal grounding to clip precise events from long streams\, egocentric reasoning for first-person and wearable contexts\, and structured “thinking traces” that reason over motion and physical space. He’ll also cover the image-side advances production perception teams care about: reliable pointing\, point-by-example one-shot visual search\, dense counting\, dial/gauge/clock reading\, and structured document extraction. \nAbout the Speaker \nAkshat Shrivastava is the CTO and co-founder of Perceptron\, previously leading AR On-Device at Meta and conducting research at UW. \nGetting Started with Perceptron AI in FiftyOne \nIn the second half of the session\, Harpreet Sahota will walk through how to get started using Perceptron’s video-native multimodal model within FiftyOne for real-world video understanding workflows. He’ll demonstrate how to connect to the API\, explore multimodal outputs inside FiftyOne\, and build practical workflows for tasks like temporal event analysis\, visual search\, and video dataset inspection. Attendees will leave with a hands-on understanding of how to integrate state-of-the-art video perception models into their existing computer vision pipelines. \nAbout the Speaker \nHarpreet Sahota is a hacker-in-residence and machine learning engineer with a passion for deep learning and generative AI. He’s got a deep interest in VLMs\, Visual Agents\, Document AI\, and Physical AI.

We close the RSVP list on Mondays if there is a waitlist\, and if you can’t make it we do kindly ask that you change your status as soon as you know to give someone else a chance to attend. SUMMARY:Health\, Mental Health\, and the Architecture of Value-Based Care in AI
DESCRIPTION:Design@Large is a UC San Diego course powered by The Design Lab that is open to the public. \n\n\n\n\nArtificial intelligence is no longer confined to research labs or technical infrastructure—it is embedded in classrooms\, creative practice\, healthcare systems\, communication platforms\, and planetary-scale infrastructures. As AI systems move from experimental tools to everyday companions\, decision-makers\, and mediators of social life\, the question is no longer whether AI will shape our future\, but how—and by whom. \nAt the Design Lab\, we approach AI not simply as an algorithmic achievement\, but as a fundamentally human-centered design challenge. Intelligent systems must be technically robust\, yet responsive to lived experience; powerful at scale\, yet grounded in context; innovative\, yet attentive to equity and responsibility. Across seven sessions\, Design@Large in Spring 2026 brings together leading voices from research\, industry\, education\, law\, health\, and the arts to explore how AI is designed\, deployed\, governed\, and experienced in real-world settings. From generative AI in education and music to embodied intelligence in XR\, from disability justice and communication to sustainable computing and Indigenous data sovereignty\, and from personal AI companions to value-based care in health systems\, the series examines AI where it meets people\, institutions\, and infrastructures. \nRather than treating AI as a purely technical system\, we frame it as a site of negotiation among human values\, institutional incentives\, cultural norms\, and material conditions. Each session pairs scholars\, practitioners\, and industry leaders to interrogate how design decisions shape agency\, creativity\, trust\, access\, and care at scale. \nDesign@Large is open to the broader public and livestreamed online\, while also serving as a core seminar for over 100 undergraduate and graduate students at UC San Diego. Together\, we ask: What does it mean to design AI responsibly? How do we ensure that intelligent systems amplify human capability without reproducing harm? And how can design guide AI toward more just\, inclusive\, and sustainable futures?

SUMMARY:VibeFest 2026 - A.I. Project Showcase & Slopathon!
DESCRIPTION:VibeFest is San Diego’s least serious\, most serious AI event of the year. It’s part trade show\, part competition\, part excuse to gather every AI enthusiast\, builder\, lover\, hater\, follower\, influencer\, and “I just got into this last week” curious-person under one roof. \n  \nAre we serious? Yes. Why do you ask? \nWe’re here because San Diego deserves to be celebrated\, and AI is fundamentally about the vibes — and frankly\, nobody’s vibes are better than ours. So we’re throwing the kind of event we wished existed: somewhere you can actually talk to people building real things\, learn something\, show off your weird side project\, and maybe win a deeply cursed trophy. \n  \nThe Two Main Events \n🎪 A.I. Project Showcase Think trade show\, minus the lanyards-and-LinkedIn energy. Got a project\, a product\, a startup\, a half-finished demo\, or a Claude prompt you’re weirdly proud of? Grab a table and show it off. Talk to people. Get feedback. Maybe find a co-founder. Maybe just find someone who’ll pretend to understand your RAG pipeline. \nDoors open at 5:00 PM for setup. Table locations are first come\, first served — show up early\, pick your spot\, plug in. \n💚 Slopathon A head-to-head competition to create the sloppiest possible AI creation. The exact deliverable and objective are announced live at the event\, so no\, you can’t pre-cook anything. The winner is crowned “The Sloppiest San Diegan” — a title of dubious honor and undeniable prestige. \nSlopathon kicks off at 6:45 PM sharp. Show up late\, slop alone. \nThe rules: have fun\, build something\, keep it sloppy. \n  \nWho’s this for? \nYou\, probably. Builders\, founders\, tinkerers\, designers\, the AI-curious\, the AI-skeptical\, students\, professionals\, hobbyists\, and anyone who’s ever ended a sentence with “…so I built a little thing.” If you care about what’s happening with AI in San Diego — whether you’re shipping production systems or still figuring out what an embedding is — you belong here. \n  \nWhy we’re doing this \nBecause the best parts of any tech scene happen in person\, not in group chats. Because San Diego has a real AI community and it deserves a real party. Because learning works better when there’s snacks and slop involved. \nAnd because — let’s be honest — we’re not building nuclear bombs here. We’re changing the world a different way. Might as well have fun doing it. \n  \n100% of proceeds go to the Ansir Innovation Center at the end of the night. Your ticket literally funds the next generation of San Diego makers\, builders\, and AI weirdos. Thanks for showing up. \nSee you May 27. Doors open at 5 for setup.

SUMMARY:AI Policy and Governance Overview | Virtual
DESCRIPTION:A free\, public workshop—no technical background needed\nAI is moving fast. The companies building it are moving fast. Governments are trying to respond\, but most people still don’t have a clear picture of what is actually happening or what good policy would even look like.\nThis workshop is meant to give people that bigger picture. \nWe’ll start with a quick\, plain-English overview of what AI is as a technology\, how today’s systems work at a high level\, and why the last few years have felt so different from the AI progress that came before. From there\, we’ll look at the new industry forming around frontier AI: the major labs\, the incentives they face\, the race to build more capable models\, and why that race has raised serious questions about safety and governance. \nThen we’ll move into AI safety: what people mean by it\, why it matters\, and why this is not just a technical issue for researchers in labs. AI already creates real problems today\, from scams and misinformation to bias\, privacy concerns\, cyber risks\, and labor disruption. More advanced models could raise the stakes further\, especially if they become better at persuasion\, hacking\, autonomous planning\, scientific research\, or acting on behalf of users in the real world. \nTogether\, we’ll explore questions like: \n\nWhat is AI\, really? What makes today’s systems different from older software\, and why are people treating this moment as a major technological shift?\nWhat is AI safety? What are researchers\, policymakers\, and companies worried about\, and which concerns are immediate versus more forward-looking?\nCurrent risks: How is AI already affecting scams\, misinformation\, privacy\, labor\, education\, and trust?\nNear-future risks: What could change if models become significantly more capable over the next year or two?\nAI legislation: What kinds of laws and regulations have been passed so far\, what are they trying to do\, and how has the debate around them gone?\nGovernance options: What policy tools are being discussed to handle more serious risks from advanced AI systems?\n\nWhat you’ll get: \n\nA beginner-friendly overview of AI as a technology and industry\nA clear explanation of what AI safety means and why people disagree about it\nA grounded look at the risks AI poses today and the risks more advanced systems may pose soon\nA concrete overview of existing AI policy efforts and the debate around them\nA map of the main governance ideas being discussed\, from transparency and evaluations to liability\, licensing\, compute governance\, and international coordination\n\nThis workshop is not about taking a simplistic “AI good” or “AI bad” position. The real world is messier than that.\nAI could bring enormous benefits\, and it could also create serious problems if we build and deploy it carelessly. The goal of this workshop is to help you understand the policy conversation well enough to follow what is happening\, evaluate proposals for yourself\, and think clearly about what responsible governance might look like before the technology gets even more powerful.

SUMMARY:SD ISSA InfoSec Networking Dinner Discussion (May)
DESCRIPTION:Topic: \nHow much Pen Testing is Enough? \nOverview:\nAt our upcoming Tabletop Exercise Dinner\, Paul Petefish will challenge one of the most deeply held assumptions in enterprise security: That Annual Pen Tests are Enough. \nThe reality? Traditional penetration testing was built for a world that no longer exists — one where infrastructure changed slowly and threat actors operated at human speed. Today’s cloud-native\, continuously evolving environments demand something far more dynamic. \nIn this session\, Paul Petefish will introduce the Continuous Penetration Testing Methodology (CPTM) — a structured framework that transforms offensive security from a point-in-time event into an always-on function. \nYou’ll walk away understanding: \n✅ Why annual pen tests are failing to reflect real organizational risk \n✅ How CPTM maps to — and exceeds — NIST\, PTES\, OWASP\, and MITRE ATT&CK \n✅ What it takes to run continuous offensive security at scale \n✅ How to shift executive risk conversations from pass/fail to measurable\, ongoing reduction \nThis one is for security leaders and practitioners who are ready to move beyond checkbox compliance and toward a future where your testing never stops. \nHosted by: Paul Petefish\, Co-Founder\, Evolve Security \nPaul is an offensive cybersecurity leader\, entrepreneur\, and researcher with over 20 years of experience. A former penetration tester\, he is the co-founder of Evolve Security\, where he has spent the past decade building next-generation offensive security solutions. \nHe is the creator of the Continuous Penetration Testing Methodology (CPTM)\, a framework that modernizes traditional testing into an always-on security control aligned with today’s cloud-native environments\, building on standards such as NIST SP 800-115\, PTES\, OWASP\, and MITRE ATT&CK and designed to integrate across modern security channels and tooling. \nPaul is also a patent holder\, published vulnerability researcher\, guest lecturer at the University of Chicago\, and a recognized cyber expert for ABC and CBS Chicago\, advancing how organizations measure and manage cyber risk. \nKPMG First Floor Training Room\n4655 Executive Dr\, San Diego\, CA 92121 \nDinner will be provided \nNote: Free street parking available – no validation \nThank You to Today’s Sponsor! \nISSA Membership & Inquiries \nJoin SD ISSA and start attending our meetings & events for FREE! SUMMARY:AI Happy Hour May - LLMWiki & Persistent Memory
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the AI Happy Hour\, where we discuss the latest developments\, applications\, and research in generative AI\, focusing on large language models. \nWhether working on technical projects or exploring AI from a business or product perspective\, this is the perfect space to share ideas\, find collaborators\, and bring your vision to life. \nOptional topic: LLMWiki & Persistent Memory \nThe LLMWiki concept involves an AI that acts as an interconnected intelligence layer over your entire digital life\, where every note\, thought\, or snippet of data you input is instantly linked\, synthesized\, and restructured by the model into a persistent\, living graph of your brain. Are you using or interested in persistent memory techniques like LLMWiki? What works best for your use case?
