SUMMARY:May 12 - Best of 3DV 2026
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to the Best of 3DV series\, your virtual pass to some of the groundbreaking research\, insights\, and innovations that defined this year’s conference. Live streaming from the authors to you. \nDate\, Time and Location \nMay 12\, 2026\n9AM Pacific\nOnline. Register for Zoom! \nPrecise lighting control in diffusion models by drawing shadows \nDiffusion models can now be used as powerful neural rendering engines that can be leveraged for realistically inserting virtual objects into images. However\, unlike traditional 3D rendering engines (e.g.\, Blender)\, they lack precise control over the lighting\, an essential requirement in an artistic workflow. We demonstrate that fine-grained lighting control can be achieved for object relighting simply by specifying the desired shadow of the object and injecting it into the diffusion denoising process. The model then produces a realistic relighting of the object consistent with the input shadow direction.

SUMMARY:From Atoms to Algorithms: GPU Acceleration of Molecular Dynamics\, DFT\, and QM/MM Simulations
DESCRIPTION:This talk will provide an overview of recent advances in GPU-accelerated molecular simulations and the computing architectures that enable them. With the end of Moore’s law\, performance improvements now depend on algorithmic innovations and specialized hardware. I will first discuss modern GPU architectures\, supercomputers\, and programming approaches that leverage massive parallelism for scientific computing. I will then highlight developments in Amber\, a leading biomolecular simulation package used for computational drug discovery. Its molecular dynamics engine features a highly optimized CUDA implementation for Nvidia GPUs\, recently extended to AMD (HIP/ROCm) and Intel (SYCL) devices\, enabling simulations of systems with millions of atoms. Finally\, I will present QUICK\, a massively parallel quantum chemistry code for Hartree–Fock and DFT calculations with Gaussian basis functions on GPUs. QUICK performs all major computational steps—including Fock matrix construction and gradient evaluation—entirely on single or multiple GPUs\, and couples efficiently with Amber for QM/MM molecular dynamics. Together\, these efforts illustrate how advances in software and GPU technology are transforming molecular simulations\, enabling faster and more accurate modeling of complex chemical and biological systems.

SUMMARY:May 11 - Best of 3DV 2026
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to the Best of 3DV series\, your virtual pass to some of the groundbreaking research\, insights\, and innovations that defined this year’s conference. Live streaming from the authors to you. \nDate\, Time and Location \nMay 11\, 2026\n9AM Pacific\nOnline. Register for Zoom! \nNavigating a 3D Vision Conference with VLMs and Embeddings \nAttending the 3D Vision Conference means confronting 177 accepted papers across 3.5 days\, far more than any one person can absorb. Skimming titles the night before isn’t enough. \nThis talk shows how to build a systematic\, interactive map of an entire conference using modern open-source tools. We load all 177 papers from 3DV 2026 (full PDF page images plus metadata) into a FiftyOne grouped dataset. We then run three annotation passes using Qwen3.5-9B on each cover page: topic classification\, author affiliation extraction\, and project page detection. Document embeddings from Jina v4 are computed across all 3\,019 page images\, pooled to paper-level vectors\, and fed into FiftyOne Brain for UMAP visualization\, similarity search\, representativeness scoring\, and uniqueness scoring. \nThe result is an interactive dataset you can query\, filter\, and explore in the FiftyOne App. Sort by uniqueness to find distinctive work\, filter by topic and sort by representativeness to understand each research area\, and cross-reference with scheduling metadata to build a personal agenda. \nI demonstrate the end-to-end pipeline and discuss design decisions regarding grouped datasets\, reasoning model output parsing\, and embedding pooling strategies.

SUMMARY:Diving deeper into software development discussions
DESCRIPTION:• What we’ll do\nCome join in discussions about Vim\, Emacs\, Linux\, Elixir\, Erlang\, OTP\, Lisp\, Haskell\, Ruby\, Javascript\, Functional Programming\, Object Oriented Programming\, Blockchain\, HashGraph\, Distributed Systems\, Decentralized Systems\, and whatever peaks your interest. \n• What to bring\nA laptop\, good questions\, exciting ideas\, an open mind and a positive attitude. \n• Where to meet\nMeet by the corn hole game in the back and look for others with laptops.\nAsk for others that are there for the software discussion group. \n• Alternate location\nSome nights the Rabbit Hole has live music. I was not able to pin down\nan exact schedule\, just sometimes we would show up and there would be a band but most times there was not. As an alternate location on live music nights the discussion group could be moved just down the street to Lestats coffee shop. They have great coffee and a nice atmosphere for hanging out and discussing software. \n• Important to know\nThis is a self organizing open discussion group that is meant to be organic\, with no main speaker or leader. It is just a time and a place for like minded people to come together to talk about software. \n• Background\nWhen I was staying in SD (Jan-Aug 2018) I was teaching software development at UCSD and the Meetup gave my cohort a space to dive further into topics that the curriculum did not allow time for. When the class was over and I went back to traveling full time\, I thought it would be an interesting experiment to leave the Meetup going and see if people would still gather to discuss software without someone to lead it. I liked the idea of a group that did not require some one to always lead it. A lot off Meetups I have been to before were always one or two people doing a lot of work to organize and put on talks but everyone else just shows up to consume and doesn’t really participate that much. Kinda like going to a movie\, in a way. The idea for this group is that it is what people make it. You get out of it what you put into it. It’s great that people are showing up still and I hope you have some great discussions. When I get back to San Diego (planning on a handful of times a year) and there is a meeting I will stop by and hang out and invite my cohort of previous students.

SUMMARY:Optimization for ML and AI Seminar: Self-play Algorithms for Math Theorem Proving
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: I will discuss RL algorithms for automated theorem proving with LLMs\, especially in the possible future regime where we run out of high-quality training data. To keep improving the models with limited data\, we draw inspiration from mathematicians\, who continuously develop new results\, partly by proposing novel conjectures or exercises and attempting to solve them. We design the Self-play Theorem Prover (STP) that simultaneously takes on two roles\, conjecturer and prover\, each providing training signals to the other. At the end of the talk\, I will mention a recent paper on extending the algorithm to include another role\, Guide\, which helps guide the conjecturer to generate clean and relevant conjectures\, and a few other related works in using AI for math. \nTengyu Ma is an assistant professor of computer science at Stanford University. His research interests broadly include topics in machine learning\, algorithms and their theory\, such as deep learning\, (deep) reinforcement learning\, pre-training / foundation models\, robustness\, non-convex optimization\, distributed optimization\, and high-dimensional statistics. \nZoom: https://bit.ly/Opt-AI-ML
