SUMMARY:Molts & Malts - Hosted by San Diego AI Circle
DESCRIPTION:Join builders from OpenClaw weekend to enjoy some post-building API’s IPA’s. \nSan Diego AI Circle is a curated group of highly technical builders working at the edge of deep learning and agentic systems. We meet in person to share what we’re building\, trade notes on the latest advancements\, and learn from / collaborate with other serious practitioners. \nAs AI tooling accelerates\, small teams can increasingly outpace large organizations by shipping focused\, niche products quickly. Meanwhile\, much of San Diego’s best technical talent is distributed across large companies\, labs\, and teams—so finding the right collaborators can be difficult. \nThis Circle exists to solve that: a central hub for builders to learn from each other\, get high-quality feedback\, and meet potential collaborators and cofounders. \nWho it’s for\nEngineers and researchers building with DL/LLMs/agents (or shipping ML products) in their domain.\nFounders and technical leaders applying AI to real use cases.\nPeople who bring projects\, experiments\, challenges\, and learnings (not just ideas). \nWhat to expect at our Cowork:\nProject shares + technical discussion.\nCollaboration / cowork-style build time (demos\, debugging\, and challenges).\nA curated\, high-signal room.

SUMMARY:Diving deeper into software development discussions
DESCRIPTION:• What we’ll do\nCome join in discussions about Vim\, Emacs\, Linux\, Elixir\, Erlang\, OTP\, Lisp\, Haskell\, Ruby\, Javascript\, Functional Programming\, Object Oriented Programming\, Blockchain\, HashGraph\, Distributed Systems\, Decentralized Systems\, and whatever peaks your interest. \n• What to bring\nA laptop\, good questions\, exciting ideas\, an open mind and a positive attitude. \n• Where to meet\nMeet by the corn hole game in the back and look for others with laptops.\nAsk for others that are there for the software discussion group. \n• Alternate location\nSome nights the Rabbit Hole has live music. I was not able to pin down\nan exact schedule\, just sometimes we would show up and there would be a band but most times there was not. As an alternate location on live music nights the discussion group could be moved just down the street to Lestats coffee shop. They have great coffee and a nice atmosphere for hanging out and discussing software. \n• Important to know\nThis is a self organizing open discussion group that is meant to be organic\, with no main speaker or leader. It is just a time and a place for like minded people to come together to talk about software. \n• Background\nWhen I was staying in SD (Jan-Aug 2018) I was teaching software development at UCSD and the Meetup gave my cohort a space to dive further into topics that the curriculum did not allow time for. When the class was over and I went back to traveling full time\, I thought it would be an interesting experiment to leave the Meetup going and see if people would still gather to discuss software without someone to lead it. I liked the idea of a group that did not require some one to always lead it. A lot off Meetups I have been to before were always one or two people doing a lot of work to organize and put on talks but everyone else just shows up to consume and doesn’t really participate that much. Kinda like going to a movie\, in a way. The idea for this group is that it is what people make it. You get out of it what you put into it. It’s great that people are showing up still and I hope you have some great discussions. When I get back to San Diego (planning on a handful of times a year) and there is a meeting I will stop by and hang out and invite my cohort of previous students.

SUMMARY:Optimization for ML and AI Seminar: (De)regularized Wasserstein Gradient Flows via Reproducing Kernels
DESCRIPTION:Bharath Sriperumbudur\, Pennsylvania State University \nAbstract: Wasserstein gradient flows have become a popular tool in machine learning with applications in sampling\, variational inference\, generative modeling\, and reinforcement learning\, among others. The Wasserstein gradient flow (WGF) involves minimizing a probability functional over the Wasserstein space (by taking into account the intrinsic geometry of the Wasserstein space). In this work\, we introduce approximate/regularized Wasserstein gradient flows in two different settings: (a) approximate the probability functional and (b) approximate the Wasserstein geometry. In (a)\, we consider the probability functional to be chi^2-divergence\, whose WGF is difficult to implement. To this end\, we propose a (de)-regularization of the Maximum Mean Discrepancy (DrMMD) as an approximation of chi^2-divergence and develop an approximate WGF\, which is easy to implement and has applications in generative modeling. On the other hand\, in the setting of (b)\, we use Kullback-Leibler divergence as the probability functional and develop an approximation to the Wassertein geometry\, which allows for an efficient implementation than that of the exact WGF\, with applications in sampling. In both settings\, we present a variety of theoretical results that relate the approximate flow to the exact flow and demonstrate the superiority of the approximate flows via numerical simulations. \nBharath Sriperumbudur is a professor in the Department of Statistics (with a courtesy appointment in the Department of Mathematics) at the Pennsylvania State University. His research interests include non-parametric statistics\, machine learning\, statistical learning theory\, optimal transport and gradient flows\, regularization and inverse problems\, reproducing kernel spaces in probability and statistics\, functional and topological data analysis. \nZoom: https://bit.ly/Opt-AI-ML

SUMMARY:AI Tinkerers & Post-Event Social at Karl Strauss
DESCRIPTION:PLEASE NOTE: THIS INVITE IS FOR THE POST EVENT HAPPY HOUR ONLY. TO REGISTER FOR THE MAIN EVENT\, PLEASE HEAD TO https://san-diego.aitinkerers.org/p/ai-tinkerers-san-diego-february-meetup-at-google\n\nThe demos might end at 7\, but the build continues.\nWhile the main February A.I. Tinkerers meetup at Google is packed with high-intensity lightning demos and deep technical dives\, the clock waits for no one—and Google kicks us out at 7:00 PM sharp. Because the best conversations usually happen in the “hallway track\,” we’re moving the entire AI Tinkerers San Diego community down the road to Karl Strauss Brewery to keep the momentum going. \n⏱ The Full Circuit\nTo get the most out of the night\, here is how we’re scaling our networking: \n\n5:00 PM – 6:45 PM: The Main Event @ Google. We’ll be heads-down in the code with lightning demos on agentic systems\, Gemini 3 Flash implementations\, and hardware optimizations.\n6:45 PM – 7:00 PM: Migration. Google clears the room\, and we head to the brewery.\n7:00 PM – 9:00 PM: AI Tinkerers After-Hours @ Karl Strauss. This is the dedicated space for low-latency\, builder-to-builder networking.\n\n🚀 Why Join the After-Hours?\nWe skip the fluff and the sales pitches during the demos\, and we keep that same energy at the brewery. This is your time to: \n\nDeep Dive: Grill the presenters on the technical architecture they just showed off.\nDebug & Debate: Discuss the trade-offs of the latest frontier models over a Red Trolley Ale.\nConnect: Meet the engineers and founders from firms like NVIDIA\, Shield AI\, and Casper Studios who are actually shipping AI products.\n\nWhether you’re looking to find a collaborator for your next experiment or just want to talk shop with people who know their way around an inference stack\, pull up a chair. \n📍 Logistics \n\nLocation: Karl Strauss Brewery (Sorrento Mesa)\nAddress: 9675 Scranton Rd\, San Diego\, CA 92121\nTime: 7:00 PM – 9:00 PM\nVibe: Casual\, technical\, and strictly “no-pitch” zone

SUMMARY:8th SD Hardware Meetup @ Downtown Works Mission Valley | Hardware for Defense
DESCRIPTION:We’re back for another Hardware Meetup!\n\nThis month we’re meeting at Downtown Works – Mission Valley! Downtown Works is San Diego’s premier co-working experience designed to fuel your startup & entrepreneurial ventures. Check them out here. \nHardware Meetups happen across over 50 cities around the world every month\, helping bring together founders\, engineers\, and other hardware professionals to networks\, share insights\, and collaborate with each other. \nOur guest speakers \nTom Cotton is leading a small product team at Motive Labs (start-up of <10) translating biomechanics research into passive exoskeleton footwear for defense and medical applications\, with plans to break into consumer athletics. He coordinates design\, prototyping\, and manufacturing between in-house teams and international partners to deliver grant-funded innovations. His approach centers on building products collaboratively with end-users\, using participant interviews and field research to balance biomechanical performance with real-world manufacturability. When not building shoes or boots\, Tom enjoys running\, hiking\, and golfing around San Diego.\n\nClayton Karmel\, founder of Dronekyll\, launched the company about a year ago after researching how to give soldiers an effective defense against small drones\, then assembled the team to bring the solution to life. A veteran electronics entrepreneur and product builder\, he previously ran a successful consulting firm for 26 years delivering everything from bicycle lights and irrigation/moisture controls to heart and muscle monitors\, wireless routers\, and other commercial devices\, and earlier led RF and defense programs at Watkins-Johnson and helped build National Semiconductor’s wireless business line\, developing high-performance PLL chips up to 2GHz that achieved major market share across GSM and CDMA. Karmel holds ~27 U.S. patents (with three additional Dronekyll applications in process) and earned a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University and an MBA from Santa Clara University; outside of work he wing-foils\, races ILCA/Laser dinghies in Mission Bay\, and backcountry skis the Eastern Sierra\, and he has lived in California since 1979 (San Diego since 1996).\n\nAgenda\n5:00-5:30 – Arrival\, mingle\, grab refreshments\n5:30-6:30 – Welcome and Introductions\n6:30-7:30 – Mix\, mingle\, and close out the night\n\nThank you to our partners \ninformal is a freelance collective for the most talented independent professionals in hardware and hardtech.\nIf you want to help support the next meetup\, please reach out to nate@informal.cc & nadimameguid@gmail.com for sponsorship/logistics inquiries.
