SUMMARY:The Front Row at Scripps Research: lecture with Travis Young\, PhD
DESCRIPTION:Reprogramming the immune system: A new era of precision immunotherapy for cancer and autoimmune disease with Travis Young\, PhD\nYour immune system is your body’s natural defense\, capable of identifying what belongs and what doesn’t. But when it falters\, it can let cancer grow unchecked or mistakenly attack your own healthy tissues\, leading to autoimmune diseases. What if we could reprogram the immune system to tip the balance in our favor\, gaining an advantage over both cancers and autoimmune disorders? In this free Front Row lecture\, Calibr-Skaggs’ vice president of biologics\, Travis Young\, will share how Scripps Research is using genetic engineering to reprogram patients’ own immune cells to create personalized “switchable” CAR-T cell therapies. This approach represents a new class of precision immunotherapy designed to induce deep and durable remissions in patients with a wide range of cancers\, from lymphoma to breast cancer\, as well as in chronic autoimmune conditions such as lupus\, rheumatoid arthritis and systemic sclerosis. Young will explain how this breakthrough strategy works and what it could mean for the future of medicine. \nLearn more at frontrow.scripps.edu. \nAbout Scripps Research \nCommitted to unraveling the intricacies of the human body and translating our discoveries into tangible global impact\, Scripps Research is consistently ranked among the most influential non-profit research institutes in the world. Throughout our 100-year history\, our scientists have expanded the boundaries of scientific understanding and played a pivotal role in the development of 17 FDA-approved medicines that have impacted the lives of countless individuals worldwide. \nThe Front Row lecture series\, now in its eighth season\, offers an exclusive glimpse into groundbreaking scientific discoveries in action. Many of these breakthroughs are the result of years of tireless work—made possible by the support of our community. \nAs we enter another century of science changing life at Scripps Research\, our focus remains the same: fueling world-class fundamental and translational research to accelerate the development of medical advances for the benefit of human health.

SUMMARY:Distinguished Lecture: Machine Learning in NextG Networks via Generative Adversarial Networks
DESCRIPTION:Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) implement Machine Learning (ML) algorithms that can address competitive resource allocation problems\, together with detection and mitigation of anomalous behavior. In this talk\, the speaker will discuss their use in next-generation (NextG) communications within the context of cognitive networks to address i) spectrum sharing\, ii) detecting anomalies\, and iii) mitigating security attacks. GANs have the following advantages. First\, they can learn and synthesize field data\, which can be costly\, time-consuming\, and non-repeatable. Second\, they enable pre-training classifiers by using semisupervised data. Third\, they facilitate increased resolution. Fourth\, they enable recovering corrupted bits in the spectrum. The talk will provide basics of GANs\, a comparative discussion on different kinds of GANs\, performance measures for GANs in computer vision and image processing as well as wireless applications\, a number of datasets for wireless applications\, performance measures for general classifiers\, a survey of the literature on GANs for i)–iii) above\, some simulation results\, and future research directions. In the spectrum sharing problem\, connections to cognitive wireless networks are established. Simulation results show that a particular GAN implementation is better than a convolutional autoencoder for an outlier detection problem in spectrum sensing.

SUMMARY:Professor Jason Eshraghian\, UC Santa Cruz\, and IEEE CASS/EMBS Distinguished Lectures
DESCRIPTION:1-3pm\, Tutorial on Circuits and Systems for Artificial Intelligence: Architecture and algorithms focusing on spiking neural nets and transformers\n\n3:30-5pm\, Distinguished Lecture and INC Computational Neuroscience Seminar: “Brain-Inspired Low-Power Language Models”\nThis talk unveils the transformative potential of achieving sub-10-watt language models (LMs) by drawing inspiration from the brain’s energy efficiency. We introduce a groundbreaking approach to language model design\, featuring a matrix-multiplication-free architecture that scales to billions of parameters. To validate this paradigm\, we developed custom hardware solutions (FPGA) as well as leveraged pre-existing neuromorphic hardware (Intel Loihi 2)\, optimized for lightweight operations that outperform traditional GPU capabilities. Our system achieves human-surpassing throughput on billion-parameter models at just 13 watts\, setting a new benchmark for energy-efficient AI. This work not only redefines what’s possible for low-power LLMs but also highlights the critical operations future accelerators must prioritize to enable the next wave of sustainable AI innovation.

SUMMARY:The Front Row at Scripps Research: lecture with Luke Lairson\, PhD
DESCRIPTION:Regenerative medicine for the treatment of MS: Enhancing repair to prevent progression\nFront Row lecture with Luke Lairson\, PhD\nMultiple sclerosis (MS) is a debilitating autoimmune disease that disrupts the central nervous system\, causing symptoms like muscle weakness\, cognitive challenges and a gradual loss of function that current treatments cannot fully repair. MS arises when the immune system attacks the myelin sheath\, the protective layer insulating neurons. Scripps Research chemistry professor Luke Lairson will discuss his research on the body’s natural repair pathways—specifically those that activate endogenous stem cells to restore myelin. His work aims to develop therapies that complement existing therapeutic approaches and halt MS progression. \nLearn more at frontrow.scripps.edu. \nAbout Scripps Research \nCommitted to unraveling the intricacies of the human body and translating our discoveries into tangible global impact\, Scripps Research is consistently ranked among the most influential non-profit research institutes in the world. Throughout our 100-year history\, our scientists have expanded the boundaries of scientific understanding and played a pivotal role in the development of over 15 FDA-approved medicines that have impacted the lives of countless individuals worldwide.
