SUMMARY:2026 AAPS National Biotechnology Conference
DESCRIPTION:Tracks and Themes\nTrack 1: Applying Translational Principles Across the Development Lifecycle\nTranslational medicine aims to predict the benefit/risk profile of therapeutics during both clinical development programs and individualized patient care post-approval. As biotechnology drives innovation in novel modalities\, new targets\, and rare diseases\, optimizing translational strategies becomes increasingly complex. \nThis track focuses on those approaches that span each development stage for all modalities\, from more established ones such as monoclonal antibodies to newer ones such as cell and gene therapies. Distinct questions must be answered to enable successful progression at each stage of drug development. Leveraging current experience allows for the refinement of strategies across both established and emerging therapeutic platforms. Additionally\, this track highlights strategies that drive progress from early discovery through preclinical studies\, clinical trials\, and\, ultimately\, to regulatory approval and market access by highlighting innovations\, lessons learned\, and best practices that enhance efficiency\, reduce risk\, and accelerate time to patients. \nTheme 1: Bridging from Therapeutic Concept to First in Human \nKeywords: Critical Quality Attributes (CQA)\, Artificial Intelligence (AI)\, Target Selection\, Pharmacokinetic and Pharmacodynamic (PK/PD)\, Physiologically Based Pharmacokinetic (PBPK)\, Quantitative Systems Pharmacology (QSP)\, New Approach Methodologies (NAMs)\, Organoid\, In Silico Models\, In Vitro Models\, Omics\, First-In-Human (FIH)\, Regulatory Strategy. \nIn discovery and preclinical work\, translational work is absolutely critical; the entire purpose of this stage is to develop in vitro and in vivo data sets that predict the safety and efficacy of a biotherapeutic in humans. The 3R principles of reduce\, replace\, and refine when it comes to animal studies have gained renewed attention as the FDA moves toward phasing out animal studies for monoclonal antibodies. This shift reflects significant scientific advancements over the past decade within in vitro and in silico tools\, which not only offer viable alternatives to animal models but also enable more refined approaches where animal use remains necessary. This theme examines how these emerging technologies are being integrated into preclinical development to inform critical decisions such as target validation\, dose selection\, and safety assessments to ultimately support a more efficient and ethical transition from preclinical studies to first-in-human (FIH) trials. Emphasis is placed on maintaining scientific rigor while also leveraging innovative methods to improve translational success. \nTopics in this theme include identifying clinically meaningful critical quality attributes\, using artificial intelligence (AI) in formulation and manufacturing\, evaluating the safety of new excipients and adjuvants\, AI-informed and genetic-driven target selection\, how to reach previously undruggable targets\, modality selection matched to disease and target\, organ-on-a-chip and organoid applications\, advances in delivery vectors\, delivering a drug to the site of action\, clinical immunogenicity prediction\, high-content sample analysis such as high resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS)\, microsampling to reduce sample size and animal numbers\, new biomarker identification including omics approaches\, reverse translation to validate preclinical models\, pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic (PK/PD) models\, physiologically based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) models\, quantitative systems pharmacology (QSP) models\, accelerating development for emerging infectious diseases\, and bioanalytical challenges with complex biologics. \nTheme 2: Bridging from First-in-Human to Registrational Trials \nKeywords: Clinical Target Validation\, Companion Biomarkers\, Novel Vectors\, Clinical Pharmacology\, Proof of Concept\, Benefit–Risk Assessment\, Adaptive Trial Design. \nIn the early phases of clinical development\, translational medicine plays a critical role in validating whether a drug has achieved the desired pharmacodynamic effect and whether that also results in the desired clinical outcomes\, thereby clinically validating the mechanism of action. These studies are also essential for identifying the optimal dose and regimen to maximize the benefit–risk profile\, rather than simply selecting the highest tolerable dose. Additionally\, by uncovering covariates that may influence safety and efficacy\, translational studies can inform the design of registrational trials\, ensuring appropriate enrollment strategies and randomization to robustly evaluate these factors. \nTopics in this theme include evaluation of novel vectors including viral and lipid nanoparticles\, challenges accounting for variability in small data sets including Phase 1 and rare diseases\, Phase 2\, how to include women of child-bearing potential in trials\, AI and machine learning in trial design\, decentralized trial design and implementation\, patient-centered data collection in clinical trials\, selection of patient population likely to respond\, clinical validation of targets and biomarkers\, evaluating clinical risks from immunogenicity seroconversion\, inferring gene expression data when tissue sampling not feasible\, parallel testing of drugs and companion biomarkers\, integrating data across multiple patient populations\, building initial exposure/response models\, developing composite biomarker to test in registrational trials\, clinical pharmacology such as drug-drug interactions\, risks of introducing fully human protein in patients with genetic mutation or knock-out\, changes in peptide development after su \nTheme 3: Bridging from Registrational Trials to Commercialization \nKeywords: Companion Diagnostic\, Commercial Formulation\, Clinical Validation of Biomarker\, Post-marketing\, Precision Medicine\, Prognostic Biomarkers\, Patient Segmentation\, Registration\, Scalable Manufacturing. \nRegistrational trials build a robust database of information intended to support individualized patient risk-benefit assessments in commercial practice. By collecting comprehensive data and characterizing treatment responses\, these trials enable further segmentation of the population based on key risk factors. This theme explores methodologies for analyzing these data and the evidentiary requirements needed to translate such insights into routine clinical decision-making. \nTopics in this theme include evaluation of drug product changes and challenges between early development and scale-up to commercial process\, intersection of microbiome and therapeutic effect\, clinical validation of biomarkers including companion diagnostics\, post-marketing surveillance\, precision medicine\, regulatory review of mechanistic data\, requirements for biomarker inclusion in the label mechanism of action\, validation of prognostic biomarkers and covariates that modulate response\, genetic variant characterization\, prediction of patient response to different medication options\, expansion to new indications\, registration with global health authorities beyond US and EMA\, lessons learned from complete response letters\, and recognizing successes in work involving novel modalities. \nTrack 2: Advancing Novel Medicine through Precision Science and Patient-Centric Innovation\nNovel medicine refers to the development of therapies that significantly improve upon existing treatments or address unmet medical needs. This track focuses on the convergence of bioanalytics\, computational tools\, formulation design\, manufacturing\, and regulatory science to enable precise\, scalable\, and effective treatment for personalized care. \nIn addition\, this track showcases innovations and best practices across discovery\, development\, and post-market refinement for novel therapies. SUMMARY:From Atoms to Algorithms: GPU Acceleration of Molecular Dynamics\, DFT\, and QM/MM Simulations
DESCRIPTION:This talk will provide an overview of recent advances in GPU-accelerated molecular simulations and the computing architectures that enable them. With the end of Moore’s law\, performance improvements now depend on algorithmic innovations and specialized hardware. I will first discuss modern GPU architectures\, supercomputers\, and programming approaches that leverage massive parallelism for scientific computing. I will then highlight developments in Amber\, a leading biomolecular simulation package used for computational drug discovery. Its molecular dynamics engine features a highly optimized CUDA implementation for Nvidia GPUs\, recently extended to AMD (HIP/ROCm) and Intel (SYCL) devices\, enabling simulations of systems with millions of atoms. Finally\, I will present QUICK\, a massively parallel quantum chemistry code for Hartree–Fock and DFT calculations with Gaussian basis functions on GPUs. QUICK performs all major computational steps—including Fock matrix construction and gradient evaluation—entirely on single or multiple GPUs\, and couples efficiently with Amber for QM/MM molecular dynamics. Together\, these efforts illustrate how advances in software and GPU technology are transforming molecular simulations\, enabling faster and more accurate modeling of complex chemical and biological systems.

SUMMARY:May 12 - Best of 3DV 2026
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to the Best of 3DV series\, your virtual pass to some of the groundbreaking research\, insights\, and innovations that defined this year’s conference. Live streaming from the authors to you. \nDate\, Time and Location \nMay 12\, 2026\n9AM Pacific\nOnline. Register for Zoom! \nPrecise lighting control in diffusion models by drawing shadows \nDiffusion models can now be used as powerful neural rendering engines that can be leveraged for realistically inserting virtual objects into images. However\, unlike traditional 3D rendering engines (e.g.\, Blender)\, they lack precise control over the lighting\, an essential requirement in an artistic workflow. We demonstrate that fine-grained lighting control can be achieved for object relighting simply by specifying the desired shadow of the object and injecting it into the diffusion denoising process. The model then produces a realistic relighting of the object consistent with the input shadow direction.

SUMMARY:The Beauty of Limits: How Constraint Can Be Where Possibility Begins
DESCRIPTION:Today’s Topic \n\n\n\nLong before “circular economy” became a buzzword\, Japan\, an archipelago scarce in many natural resources\, developed an aesthetic in which limits were generative rather than restrictive. This sensibility emerged from geography\, climate and religious tradition\, reaching systematic expression in the Edo period. Meiji Japan consciously adopted linear-progress thinking\, yet the older wisdom doggedly persisted. Join us for a discussion that explores that persistence and asks what it might offer: not anxiously waiting for breakthrough solutions\, but finding beauty and social utility in working within limits. \nThis Japan Zoominar @ UC San Diego is organized by the Japan Forum for Innovation and Technology at the UC San Diego School of Global Policy and Strategy (GPS). For more information on activities\, as well as recordings of previous Japan Zoominars\, please visit jfit.ucsd.edu. \nIf you have any questions\, please contact GPS Events Coordinator Bev Fruto.

SUMMARY:Make an AI video - with real acting?!
DESCRIPTION:We are a community of creators\, writers\, hackers\, and filmmakers exploring the frontier of AI-powered video and storytelling. \nThe theme of this week is workflows that include camera work in AI production. Some say “hybrid.” That means you film people doing stuff and their performance is key to diving the end results. Often a fair amount of AI locations and characters are involved. Somewhat inspired by Virtual Production\, but entirely possible with no green screen. \nJust: 1) camera 2) actor 3) prompts. \nWe will teach accessible workflow for everyone to learn. You may bring your own sauce. But no Gens before the clock starts. \nMany of us come from traditional backgrounds and bring our own strengths to compliment the new AI workflows. We are exploratory and run “Lab Sessions”. Visual sprints. We embrace AI while recognizing that intention and iteration are the antidote to slop. \nMany events just talk about AI. \nWe actually use it. \nOur meetings are fast-paced\, social and hands on. You will meet collaborators\, learn new tools\, and actually create something during the session. What happens in a session: \n1. Introduction: (10 min) Learn the core workflow and see examples: idea –> outline –> images –> videos –> edit \n2. Lightning Rounds (10 min) David Andriate (want to speak? Please sign up for future events) \n3. Jam Sessions (90 mins) Break into small groups and make AI videos together. Each event has a theme to spark creativity \n4. Screening and Hangout (20 min) We watch what we made and vote on our favorite. \nWe draw from ideas in Pixar’s creative developments\, and Agile Filmmaking. The human dynamic and review cycle is core\, but everything happens faster with AI in the mix. We accept people coming from many backgrounds. Just bring your passion and a laptop. \nHow does it actually work? When you form a team it’s good to have a writer leading. Often they are collecting ideas from the team and managing a thread with a chat bot of your choice. This lets your team make an outline\, and define your characters and theme. Core images are then used to expand outwards to keyframes in a narrative and visual content using various generators. Advanced methods include filming video for input to control performance and visual dynamics. Standard methods use image to video\, text to video and agentic workflows. Curation and sequencing establish your core story. Editing and sound level it up.
